Subject: Men's vs Women's tri tops

My tri club is taking orders for tops and I probably won't get a chance to go try on the tops before the deadline (besides the fact I'm going to guestimate how much weight I'll have lost by this summer and buy a tad smaller than I am now) so I wanted some opinions from any other Athenas.  I'm a large (okay downright fat) girl, just getting into tris mostly to lose weight and my worst area of my body is my upper arms (at least that's what I think).  The fat there is quite concentrated on the inside of my arms.

Anyway, I was wondering if I'm bound to have less chaffing with the men's style sleeveless tri top than with the women's style (the more tank-top cut)?  I'm not worried so much about women's overall cut since I'm not that endowed or curvy.  I tend to fit just as well in men's clothes overall.  I'll probably have to body glide up regardless.

Any thoughts or experiences?  Thanks in advance.

Hi Kelley!

I was pretty big when I started tri'ing, and now I have large, well-developed shoulder girdles ... in either case, I would say definitely go with the men's top (unless they are ordering tank-style tops where there is lots of arm room). My first tri suit, I had to take out a lot of the threading in the armholes and stretch the holes out--not pretty!

Thank you for asking this question! I hadn't thought about getting a men's top, but I will! Usually they make a woman's top shorter, and I'm tall. Good idea.

Last summer, I picked up a male top on sale for a ridiculous price. I like the  coverage on the shoulders and it is longer in the torso. I still have to wear a tri-bra top underneath, but it's worked well for me in a few races.

I don't know, I've tried men's tops and they just don't fit me right.  It looks like I'm wearing a men's top cause I can't find the right size in a women's.

I guess it really depends on your body shape.
