Those of you in the North, I know you are going to laugh at me but down here in the South, 40 degrees is cold. So...what should I wear. I will be running a 1/2 marathon on Saturday morning beginning at 6:30. The temperature is going to be between 40-48. Sunday, I am riding the metric century at 7:30. The temperature is expected to be the same.

I own sets of the Under Armor Cold Gear tights and tops, but was wondering if these would be too much for this temperature. Any advice would be appreciated. The weather rarely gets this cold where I live and when it does, I run inside.

Thanks!

Uh, yeah. Laughing...

At 40 degrees I run in shorts, a compression top (like under armour) and a long sleeve wicking shirt over that. As it get sloser to 50 I would lose the under armour. Fact is I run like that down to about 30 degrees.

As for cyling I would probably wear my insulated tights (closer to 50 I may not use insulated ones). Up top under armour base, long sleeve jersey, maybe start out with a wind breaker jacket and lose it as it warms up. Gloves probably to.

For me, running and cycling are completely different to dress for.

In running, the rule of thumb I like is that you want to be cold for the first mile or so until you warm up. If you can't tolerate being cold, then wear a throw-away that you can discard. For a 40° start I would wear running shorts, and a long-sleeve CoolMax under a short-sleeve singlet. If I felt that might be too warm, I would put the SS under the LS and remove the LS if I got hot and tie it around my waist fopr the rest of the run. Prior to the start I would have an old sweatshirt or a garbage bag that I could toss to the side.

On the bike, I never warm up due to the wind chill. For a 40° start, I wear cycling shorts under thermal tights on the bottom, and a LS CoolMax under a LS thermal jersey with a wind vest on top. I would also have full finger gloves, a helmet liner, and toe covers.

X2

Most people (myself included) have a tendancy to over dress for the run.  I have finally learned that I should be uncomfortable at the start.  You will warm up, its a matter of how much which depends a lot on effort.  What some people do if they are unsure is where a top layer of something they are not afraid to lose and if they get too warm they ditch it on the course.

For the bike I would try and be comfortable at the start by not warm.  Wind resistant is going to be the key for the ride.

Good luck and enjoy the events!

I have heard the 20deg rule.  Basically start like it is 20 deg warmer so in your case 60.  Sure you will be cold a the start but won't have to worry about shedding layer after layer.  What would you wear for 60deg, wear that.  You could always wear a cheap shirt to the start and just dump in before the race starts that way you are not out a lot of $.
