Subject: Treadmill - are you a heavy sweater?

When you run on a treadmill, do other gym-goers avoid running near you, like they do me?  I'm at week 13 of a 16-week marathon plan, which has me doing some pretty long runs.  The weather's pretty iffy these days, so I'm about 50% treadmill, 50% road/trail.  Yesterday was a 11-mile tempo (3 w/u, 6 @ 7:14, 2 cooldown).  As I'm running along, I notice that my fellow treadmillers aren't kicking up near the sweat that I'm laying down.  At the end of my run, I was soaked, the console was soaked, the tread was soaked, etc.  I actually ran the tread at 1mph when I finished my run and wiped it down with my towel.

Are you a heavy sweater?

I sweat like a dog on the treadmill.  I don't let it get to me.  I did see a trophy wife on the treadmill next to me get off and move to another treaddy but you know it is a gym right?!  If I'm not taking a fan from somebody else I'll point it directly at me.  That helps keep me cooled down.

Very heavy but so what it's a gym. I just make sure I clean up when I'm done and that's all I worry about. I've seen people move before but I find it kind of funny.

I can soak my shoes to the point of squishing, soaked the treadmill, and the wall behind it had sweat splatters all over from sweat being flung off the belt. It was embarrassing, so now I only run outside. Don't have to worry about it. the only activity I do inside is riding on the rollers, and that is in my garage.

HELL YEAH! And making matters worse, I use the treadmill after I swim and I have long hair, so people must think my hair is wet just from the sweat, or that I'm a freak of nature. I also have to clean off the front of the treadmill...that plastic part over the belt. Gross. But it makes me feel good.

Depending on the intensity, it can get dangerous for me because the belt starts to get wet and can get quite slippery. Usually, anything  beyond about 12 miles @ GA Pace or about 8 miles @ Tempo Pace.

I am sure there is at least one thread on some running/fitness forum authored by some poor gym rat who had the misfortune to hop on a treadie next to mine late in a workout. (The Rant is sure to be interesting )

FWIW: I usually bring a big beach towel with me to the gym and cover the console with it so at least it stays dry. But, I am also pretty good about wiping up the mess afterward so the next rat does not have to put up with a slimy machine. (Not much to do about the tread though)

I don't sweat all that much, but it is hard to tell now that I have enough dri-fit shirts to run in. I don't wear cotton anymore and dri-fit shirts don't absorb the sweat so I don't notice it as much. I do, however, have to wear a hat or sweatband or something since the dri-fit is fairly ineffective at wiping the sweat out of my eyes.

I sweat in gross proportions and I wear the wicking stuff and I still get that wet...and I bet it is so attractive to see a girl like that.  I blame my dad...it must be genetic.

Yeah....defnitely a heavy sweater here...Whenever I hop on the treadmill, which is often...I always wear a thick hoodie which covers my arms and torso...this ends up catching all of the sweat. I'm still soaked but at least it doesn't go everywhere and get on people. ;P

I start sweating when I'm nearing the treadmill. After the first .25, I'm drenched. I've always been like that....thanks Dad.

I get really red too.....and my left arm starts to go numb.....and I lose feeling in my feet. It's probably nothing though.

I am probably what would be considered a 'mild' sweater on the treadmill.....I used a hand towel and just 'wipe up' every few minutes....it seems I am okay for the first 10-12 minutes...and it is really only my face that 'drippy' wet.....If there is a fan available I will definitely use it though - I hate feeling HOT when I am running. That makes me want to stop far sooner than my cardio endurance would.

during my strength training (with cardio intervals) that I do 3 times/week I can be a good sweater too! I feel bad for my trainer that does my stretches at the end (LOVE that part!)....my calves are soaked. And sometimes when he has me do 'these balance/core excercises' on my knees on the big balance balls my chins are too sweaty to even allow me to balance without slipping!

there is this one guy at my gym who leaves a 'sweat trail' throughout the gym....it is quite funny actually....you can tell exactly where he's been!

ETA: that should be SHINS not CHINS......those are no longer 'plural' for me!

I sweat like crazy. I've been meaning to measure how much I actually lose in an hour one of these days.

I sweat big time!  On the treadmill, outside, in spin class.  In fact, I seldom use my trainer and opt for the spin & stationary bikes at the gym intead so that I don't get the sweat all over my bike.

Even with fans on the treadmills at our gym, I still sweat profusely. Several times, the person to my right or left has moved over a treadmill b/c my sweat is flying. I ran 13 on the treadmill yesterday- damn my nipples were chaffed!!
Another thing is that they keep our gym so flippin hot.....

I sweat a lot, but unless I am at 7.5mph or better, it doesn't fling all over the place...but it does saturate my treadmill.  I usually wear a hat to keep the sweat out of my eyes, and my dri-fit hat does just that.  However, once that becomes saturated, it starts dripping from the brim of the hat like a faucet that isn't shut off all the way.  It can be embarassing, but it seems more of the none sweaters tend to look on in envy, rather than disgust.  I personally think I look better all glistening and shiny.  HA!

I sweat so much that everything I wear is soaked and dripping after about 3 miles. I almost ruined my Garmin indoor pod from sweat dripping on it. Now the on/off button sticks as it was drenched in sweat. I hate it. All of my paces go out the window, my hr is trough the roof. I have to scale back on pace to maintain the zone work. Fan helps big time. Many, many gyms don't have it. Hotels not to even mention. Some of them are so bad that I could get a heat stroke. I asked one hotel manager few weeks ago about temp and ventilation in his cardio room. He responds, it is great temp is set at 75F. I said vow, that is a presription for emergency room, running in 75F with no fan. Keep in mind running on treadmill, no air/wind to cool you as outside. And I had a 11 mile run to do, Omaha, minus gazillion degrees outside, snow, ice, wind. Needless to say I went outside.
