Subject: slight ear pressure/pain during swim
I was wondering if anyone out here gets slight ear pain when swimming, which thus causes a big headache. At first I thought water was getting in my ear but I replaced my ear plugs so it's not that.

It's hard to explain. It sort of feels like pressure when you are in a plane during descent, but I wouldn't think the inch of water I'm in would cause that much disconfort.

It's bad enough that I'm having second thoughts about the tri I was going to attempt in March '05.

Does anyone else have this problem? Please advise if there's something you do to prevent this.

Are you putting your earplugs in too tightly?  If they're forming a complete seal, they could actually be "sucking" your ears, kinda like how goggles feel like they're sucking out your eyeballs if you get them sealed to tightly.  Try putting them in and then swallow to make your ears pops.  That may help.

You can also try homemade earplugs made out of cotton balls.  I can't remember how you make them, but you can google the info.

Why the 2nd thoughts?

I'll try a different kind of ear plugs. Maybe the one I got is causing the problem, like you said.

In regards to why I might not attempt the tri, the pain that's in my ear and head is pretty bad. I mean, I have to sit there on the side of the pool for a good 15 minutes or so before it subsides to the point I can walk to the shower.

If you don't have a medical condition that requires you to wear ear plugs, you might want to try going without. I've tried them a couple of times and don't like them at all -- I find that the pressure in my ears is regulated much better when I don't have anything in them.

Dont know if this is related or not. But Ihad some bad sinus problems after I started to swim. I bought a nose clip, and take sudafed before hitting the pool. Seems to have done the trick.

I did read that some people can have their sinuses aggravated from chlorine-I guess Im one of those people.

If you're in that much pain and it doesn't go away soon after the swim, go see a ENT doc!  Also, the homemade earplugs you can try are petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls.  I haven't tried them, but I've read that they work well.  That should help keep water out of your ears but not increase pressure.
