lisac957 - 2008-02-15 11:32 AM Bring a digital voice recorder (the new version of the little tape recorders you can get them for like $30) to your next meeting and record your conversations. I'm sure the Board would be interested to see how you are being treated.

Not a bad idea!

Do they get snow days?

Okay, I won't get into that one.  What's the school, the teacher's name, the Principal's name, and the Vice-Principal's name?  I like to write nasty-grams (but I wouldn't mention anything regarding this incident) or talk on the phone with them!

MikeTri37 - 2008-02-15 10:57 AM The problem is the public school system here in South Florida, it's NOT an option. I emailed the teacher again and called for another appt. with the principal next week. I'll let everyone know what happens. If I can't be a part of my childs education, I will go elsewhere.

I think you should meet with the principal FIRST, without the teacher present. Make sure you and the principal are in accord, then bring the teacher in. It is the principal's job to make sure the teacher is in accord, not your job. Make sure the principal understands that. Cannot believe they ganged up on you the first time...

If you don't like the tone they take with you, take notes in front of them during both meetings. That will REALLY get their attention. Also, be prepared to throw out the names of the Board members during your meeting. Nothing will be resolved if you don't have their complete attention.

This is freakin' kindergarten...

As a kindergarten teacher. . .1. grades aren't important in kindergarten. She should be painting, coloring, playing and developing a healthy sense of herself. 2. You are the final authority when it comes to her well being. NOT THEM! 3. Get her out of there. Without support from the administration, there won't be any shift in how your daughter is treated. 4. Save your 10K and stick it in her college fund. Private shcool doesnt' always = better.
Just my .02 cents. . . . I've had unusual requests and conferences throughout the years but the one thing that remains a constant is the teachers and parents need to work together for the benefit of the child. End of story.

Do they get snow days?

Eh, I went to public school and we never got snow days either Actually, one year, they used...gasp...one extra snow day and we had to extend school by like a week - which was dumb because the Regents exams had alrady been taken (NY has standardized testing for core classes in high school) so there was nothing to do.

Also, props to the kindergarten teacher who posted that 5 year olds should be acting like CHILDREN!! Arg..I mean, I hope my kids, if I ever have any, are bright and excel beyond their peers (b/c I was reading chapter books in kindergarten and they didn't know what to do with me), but letting kids be kids goes a long way towards healthy, stable adults, ya know?

Yes $10 k a year.
Welcome to South Florida.

I laugh when people tell me how expensive California is. They have no idea what Florida is like.

Actually, tuition is only $8750, but after all the extras, it's over $10,000.

Any by the way, it's just a "mid level" private school. We also have Pine Crest @ $18k per year and Westminster @ $14k per year. All these schools are in the same city.

1. stop payment on the school.  2.  If already paid, get a lawyer.  3.  Get your daughter out of that school.  4.  Before pulling her, sit in on a class and humiliate the teachter in front of her students and see how she likes it.

4. is kind of kidding, but it would be fun.

I hear ya'.  My son turns 5 in 2 weeks, he's in Pre-K (Montessori) and the tuition is $6500 per year.

Not to sound too "old timer," but this is less than my college tuition for a full year in for the year I graduated undergrad, in 1996-97, at a Big Ten school.

If you don't have the ability to get a fair conference and the principal is throwing what sounds like a temper tantrum of one of your childs classmates, I'd leave quickly as many others have said.

I have kids in private school and when we did have a problem with a teacher (not just my kid, but 8 or 9 out of 19) we were able to get quick resolution to the situation. To me, that is why I pay the $$$ for private school. A quick solution to a problem may be more difficult to come by in the public schools where class sizes are bigger and (perhaps) the school is expected to take care of the kids rather than any parental involvement....However, public school can definitely be good but it just takes a lot of diligence on the parents part and stay on top of what your kids are involved in (at least here that is very necessary....bad...bad...public schools)

Good luck

"If I have a problem with that, I should find a new school. "

Sounds like great advice to me.

If I'm paying a group of my own employees $10,000 for 9 months of work they darn well better be willing to listen to me when I make a request! That's what this is, an employee/employer relationship. Just because someone is a principal doesn't mean he owns the business.

My son is in kindergarten and I also have a daughter in the 3rd grade, although we are in public schools.  I can relate to what you are going through and I am surprised that the teacher/school isn't working better with you.  Simply unacceptable!  On the one hand I can see where it is difficult for the teacher as  when there is a  kid(s) that is disruptive, if they move your daughter away from him/her then they have another kid that will be put in the same situation.  None the less, they need to find a remedy.  We have requested  meetings with ours kids teachers and principal for these type of problems and the school has always been made time to listen to us.  What I do find frustrating is that the school is of the opinion that they need to do what is best interest for all the kids.  Meaning, even if there is a bully or class clown at school, as long as he or she isn't punching, or inappropriately touching the other students, the school really doesn't look at it as a serious problem.

Anyway, I don't know what your options are in Florida but if I were you I would find a new school.  You want to get your kids off to the best possible start...even in kindergarten.  Besides, not only is this teacher not showing you respect, sounds like the principal is very unprofessional and showed you a lack of respect as well.  Yea, you need to find a new school.

That's not true. In public schools, they do noting because their hands are tied by policy and regulations.
