Subject: How Often do You Replace Your Swimsuit?

I have found that I can get about 3 to 4 months out of a suit (swimming 2 to 3 times a week) before it just completly loses it's elasticity.  It actually starts to appear thinner, a month before that.

Is that typical, or should I be doing something different to maintain them?  I pretty much just rinse them immediatly with cold water, wash them once about every two weeks, and never put it in the drier.....

It would be nice to get a little longer life out of them since they cost about $40 a pop....

It was the same for me until I bought a speedo "endurance" suit, which has some polyester in it.  I have had it almost 2 years and I am just now thinking about getting a new one. It is a thicker fabric and doesn't get thin and show your butt crack.  The leg holes have stretched a little so I am looking for a new one, but I will get the endurance again.  They are slightly more expensive but absolutely worth it, IMHO.

Buy a polyester suit. It will last until you get sick of it, or forget it at the pool. I've got over 500,000 meters of swimming in my current polyester drag suit.

Same here, and it doesn't matter what kind of suit I wear. I think our pool has a particularly high level of chlorine in it. The 'chlorine resistant' suits don't wear any better than a cheap one.

Women's suits actually cost a little more, but I've found great polyester ones for $20--look for sales at big sports chain stores and then online places like swimoutlet.com, sportsbasement.com.

Polyester is key. I beat up bathing suits like nobody (swim a lot in them in chlorine and salt, leave 'em wet in bags for months, etc.) and polyester lasts YEARS.

I just stock up on suits and rotate them, they seem to last longer that way. They always go out at the arse 1st for some reason (farting?)  I bought a ton from swimoutlet.com.  Club swim have the cheapest ones at $20 I think.

Sound like that is typical (not the farting!).  I thought it could have been when I lean against the wall during my rest interval - the conc. wall rubbing through to my arse.  But for a month, I intentionally did not lean against a wall and it still happened.

I typically get about 18 months out of a Speedo Endurance polyester suit...the little lycra "modesty panel" wears out long before the rest of the suit.
swimming 2-4 times a week...I ve got 250K yards on the one I am wearing now, and it's just starting to get a little ratty.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I ALWAYS shower in mine after swimming in the pool to rinse out the salt (my club has a saltwater pool). To date, I've gotten more than 150K yards out of my polyester suit and there's no sign of wear.

Replace them early and often.

I learned this the hard way with my trusty Speedo. You can read the story here-> http://stephbachman.blogspot.com/2008/01/i-see-you-baby-showing-tha...

I did get 5-6 years of intermittent use out of that suit, though, so it wasn't the suit's fault. I got another speedo recently and it is doing fine. Please note, however, that with bathing suits the sizing is different from regular clothes - the bust circumference number is far more accurate that the "size".

Well with me it could really be either way

Back in my swimming days my coaches always told me to atleast rinse my suit to make it last longer. It seems to work well for me.

I've been really happy with my speedo endurance suit.  I've had it for about 9 months and it still looks great!  I noticed they have my same suit on clearance at sierra trading post.  Its 1/2 price now!

Thanks a lot all.......  I'm on my way to Sports Authority to get a new suit.  I'll be looking for the Speedo Endurance or something else made of poly.  I can wait to get rid of my other one.  I may have another month in it - but I want something new

Thanks again!

I rinse immediately and wash in woolite /cold water ASAP.  Suits with polyester are more chlorine resistant than those without.  My chlorine resistant suits are holding up well rotating between 3 of them since early last summer and no signs of any of them being worn out.  The nonchlorine resistant suits would have been disintegrated by now.  I air dry all my suits on the edge of the tub or a towel bar

x2 on the woolite and the air dry on the edge of the tub. I rotate 5 suits. When mine get really thin, I limit them to guarding only because we have to wear shorts and t-shirts on deck. I would be appropriately covered if I had to make a save.

Speedo has two different suits that say they are chlorine resistant. One has some lycra in it & it will fall apart. Get 100% polyester or one with PBT and/or Poly blend.

I have suits 3 years old that look brand new.

My sister teaches water aerobics like 12 classes a week a turned me on to the better type. I find at swimoutlet.com or speedousa.com I can get the good suits for under $40 often around $30. You better like them a lot as you'll have them a long long time.

x4 - or whatever number we're up to now on the poly suits. And if you can rotate at least two suits they will last you a long long time. The other trick is not to wring the suit out after you rinse it (in addition to rinsing it every time). Helps avoid unnecessary stretching to the suit, and rotating two suits allows for them to be completely dry before you put it on again

Gee, I had no idea about the differences between poly and lycra in the pool. Good question!

I like the Speedo XDSkin suits, which say they're chlorine resistant but really last only as long as every other lycra suit.  However, I  love getting new swimsuits, and I don't like how polyester feels.  Even if I get two suits a year, it's cheaper than one pair of Asics (or half a pair of Newtons) and makes me happy.  Don't wear them in the shower or the hot tub; hot water is bad for swimsuits.

I also agree with Kathy on the online prices, but in the last few years have had some bad experiences with swimoutlet.  Their website says repeatedly that you can't order something out of stock, but somehow I manage  to do it for every order.  They take my order and charge my credit card, then about a week later I get email from them saying that some piece of my order isn't available and rather than backordering it they are canceling the order and I should expect a refund on my credit card in 5-10 business days.  It is usually anywhere from $20-50, so not huge amounts, but I don't think it's a very honest way to do business, and certainly inconvenient -- I'd have ordered elsewhere in the first place to get it sooner and not have to pay shipping costs in more than one place.  Makes me sad b/c I have shopped there for years; only in the last 2-3 years have I had this problem.

So my lycra speedo jammer is....well, definitely past due. Regarding the polyester suits, do they fit and feel similar to a lycra suit? I like the compression fit and feel of the lycra suit but my suit no longer has any of these traits. It seems like the speedo endurance suits are really not that much more expensive, so I might try those. The butt of my suit is also the most worn out part so apparently I am not alone on this one.

Last season I bought a pair of TYR 9" Male Race Shorts and have been pleased with the overall quality and durability. I'm positive I’ll get another season out of them so I would have to say I'll replace my swimsuit every other season

Thanks again everyone!  I picked up a couple last night.  They were on sale and got two for $75.  I got a jammer pair, and for the first time, a smaller "boy short" type - gulp!  (I'm not sure what they are called - they look like a croped jammer)  I will probably never be ready for the bikini type unless I get a body like the models that show them.  They were a little harder to find - they had a lot less and I had to search through a lot of tags to read the material make-up.

I'm stoked to see how long they last.  I threw away my other ones with glee last night!

For one of the above posters...  They seem almost exactly the same as the lycra suits.  You can tell a small difference in material - they seem a tad bit heavier - but mostly just the same!  SO happy right now, going for a swim at lunch to "test drive" them!
