Well peeps, I am fearing the worst here. I tried to call BanBu Grille FOUR TIMES yesterday and I either got a fast-busy, or "your call cannot be completed as dialed". Have they gone out of business??? Perhaps this is why I could not get the manager to call me back or speak to me??? I'm still trying, but I'm fearing we may be in a bind. If I can't get in touch with them over the weekend...

PLAN ON CARRABBA'S FOR THE DINNER.

They're avoiding you because they heard what happened to the LAST 2 places that hosted the BT dinner.

I'm absolutely beginning to believe that.  Either that, or the fact that we decided to have it there gave them reason to close up shop.  Watch out Carrabba's.

Any of you locals know what the water temp is like.  I thought the weather channel showed it close to 78.

I don't know since I am on the other coast of Florida. The next couple of days are going to be much cooler so that might help keep it in wet suit temp.

I've *heard* it would be extremely rare to not allow wetsuits at St. A's.  I don't know how knowledgeable my source is...he also *warned* me the swim would be wicked.  I heard it was awful 2 years back but otherwise haven't heard anything really bad.

2 years ago was nasty. The first few waves weren't bad but it got really windy and conditions worsened. By the time the TNT'ers and weaker swimmers got out the waves had picked up quite a bit. Lots of people were pulled out of the water.

They do magic math to insure it remains wetsuit legal due to the number of purple people and other weaker swimmers. I made the mistake of swimming without a wetsuit 2 years ago because I thought it was too stinking warm(news sources claimed temps in the 80s) even though it was technically "legal" for the age group field and got bounced around worse on the swim than I should have. I was in one of the later waves and I came out 84/157 for my age group and am typically a top 1/3 swimmer and then I felt the fatigue on the run. Lesson learned- wear the stoopid wetsuit.

I was on Clearwater Beach this weekend and the water was chilly!  I would have been MUCH more comfortable in a wetsuit!!

yes, but Ft DeSoto is around the bend a good ways from where we will be swimming for ST A's.

We have a cold snap right now that should keep the water cool.

I'm hoping for a wetsuit swim myself.  The water at IMAZ was chilly but once I got in and swam a while I was almost hot.  I'd rather have a chilly condition so we can all get more buoyant!

OK, peeps...here's my executive decision on dinner.  Carrabba's.  I can't get thru to BanBu...they may have already folded.  I keep getting a fast busy.  If anyone else wants to try, feel free.  But I'm going with Carrabba's.  I'll update our list this week.  Please post here if you haven't already and would like to come.  Or would like to cancel.  12 days to go til race day!!

Hey all,

This will be my 4th St. A's and all have been wet suit legal. It is still rather chily in the monring ( by Florida standards) so the suits will be allowed more likely then not!

Also count myself +1 for Carrabas!

See you all in a week or so!

Yay! Getting excited.

I wonder how many ppl we have coming to the dinner this year? Seems to get bigger and bigger every year.

I am so psyched to watch the Meek n Might folks - Mimi's daughter, Sue's dad, etc., as well as everyone else on Sunday.

We need to get a participant list going for both races so I know who to cheer for!

I go off at 7:10 again this year.  Make sure you are there bright and early so that you and Wendi can squeeze me into my wetsuit.

Either that or- Jamie (piperfl) suggested - they could do it buffet style. Maybe select a few entrees- spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, chicken parm, etc. And people can just sit down and serve themselves...

Good question...I am afraid to even call Carrabba's and tell them we have XX people coming cuz they might be scared or tell me "sorry we can't do that".  I was almost thinking we should just show up and be seated in groups of 6 or 7 or whatever.  Just tell them at the door we'd like to have tables as close together as possible.

What do you guys think?  Should I call and say "hi I am beginner triathlete dot com and we'd like to...what?  You have heard of us?  We're a curse?"  LOL

Seriously though...should I call and make a res for like 50 or should we all just start arriving around 445 and just make groups and sit down?  I'm beginning to think the latter is more doable than the former at this point.

I would call and say this: "Hi, me and a large group of individuals will be in town for the race next weekend and are looking to do a group dinner.  How many people can you accomodate in one group, or is it just easier to put us into smaller groups as we show up?"  I would not mention BT, we seem to have a bad rep in the St Pete area,   Carrabra's that I know are generally pretty small and may not be large enought to accomodate all of us anyways.

Hybrid solution.

Call them and let them know that we are going to have about 50 people coming.  If they have a large section of the restaurant that they could situate us in would be great.  We don't have to all sit in one or two huge groups (like we did at Longhorn) but would prefer to have a bunch of tables of 8 or so people per table.  That way it gives us flexibility to get up and mingle from table to table.

I think it would be more disastrous to the staff to show up as a bunch of large parties.  This way, they can plan for us.

I'm pretty sure we can't jinx a large comglomerate like Carrabas....then again maybe we should ask Buca Peppos how much money they will give us to NOT eat at their restaurant!!
