Subject: racing while pregnant?
Just wondering if there's anyone out there that has ever done a race while pregnant?? I'm considering just doing the swim portion of a half ironman for a relay. Don't worry, I'll be checking with my doctor the next time I see him, but I'd like to hear about someone else's experience. I'm a very strong swimmer and I've done the full race a couple times already, so I know what to expect as far as the course goes.
I'd love to hear your stories....

How far along would you be at race time and how competitive are you? If you are competitive and get caught up in the washing machine I would be concerned with the kicks and punches that are thrown.

Otherwise, I have known women to swim laps right into their 8th month.

I raced with a woman who was 26 weeks pregnant. She did an oly. Just at a much lower HR than normal. I would be so scared to risk it on the bike at that point. But her doc told her it would be ok as long as she kept her HR below 145.

Ir probably isn't the best idea. Putting your body through that type of stress is not usually recomended for pregenant women. Talk to your ob about it before you do anything.

When I was pregnant with my twins, my doctor had told me I could continue working out as I had prior to being pregnant. I actually ran a 10-mile race very early in my pregnancy and was fine. I was only able to run for a few months because I got rather big. The docs did tell me not to bike on the roads once I started to show.

I was also told swimming was actually the best thing I could have done. My only concern for you would be getting kicked in the stomach during the race. That wouldn't be good. How far along would you be?

Good Luck and keep us posted!!!!

I forgot which professional triathlete (lori bowden?) it was but in the tri movie "what it takes" one of them raced the swim portion of a triathlon and used swimming to keep in shape for her ironman afterwards.
