When the weather works - I do Long run on Thursday and Long rides on Saturday, with a shorter ride (75% of the long ride) with a run on Sunday.

I don't do long run and long ride on back to back days...48 hrs between works well.

Alternating weeks is one viable option.  Another is to try to separate them within the week.  For example, do a long run Wed or Thurs and do a long bike on the weekend.

Long ride Sat am (starting at 6:30).  Long run Sunday late morning, around 11:30.  Usually around 24 hours separating them.  Not ideal, as someone (amiine?  ) will surely post, but the thought of a 2 hour run before work makes me nauseous

I wish I could that, but with parental responsibilities, I only have the weekends to fit them in

If that's the case, there's not really many options.  You either alternate and/or gradually build to the point where you can handle them back-to-back.  You do what you can.

I have a question about balancing running LSD's with biking/trainer long rides weekly. I find it nearly impossible to do both disciplines LSD each week. Plus I don't think my body could handle the effort. My focus has been running and therefore I'm doing mostly LSD runs and nearly non-existent long bike rides - my max bike time has been an hour lately. My question is what do those of you do to get them both in? Do you alternate LSD efforts- say LSD run one weekend and long bike ride the next week and so on?

I look forward to your replies.

Saturday- I do a long ride, 3-4.5 hours

Sunday- I do a long run, 1-2.5 hours

During the week I do 2 bike trainer sessions, and 2 short running sessions... along with 1-2 swim sessions.

So, why can't you do a long ride and long run on the weekend?

Because she said:

There is nothing wrong with separating the things by a week if that is all you can fit in.  You do the training that you can, not what the tri population does as a whole and sees as "necessary."  I'm sure most people have at least seen the thread in the Ironman forum about "big weekends" versus breaking them up.

But you need to come to grips with the fact that your longer endurance may not build as much or as fast as you would like compared to those that do fit in both.

Maybe start with long run Saturday, short bike Sunday then the next weekend flip them so you have long bike on Sat. and short run on Sun.??  At least that way you are not overloading your body as much but you still have the benefit of two days straight.  Just a thought .....

Well I have to spend time with my daughter too, so therefore, I only do long one day and the other day, I reserve as a day for us to spend together - travelling and whatnot. I'm a single parent, so I'm not as flexible as others may be.

Well, what are you training for specifically? What do you consider a long training session? What time do you have to spend on each one on the weekends?

I'm training for an IM... I need a 4 hour bike ride on the weekend. You might be training for sprints... so you don't need that long of a bike ride.

My long days are Saturdays. I start at 5 on the trainer and finish on the road when it is light out. I alternate weeks between run and bike. You will be finished by 10:00 and have the entire day with the kiddos. We have 3 - ages 5, 4, and 2.

The idea of alternating them is good on weekends.

How about long movie trainer ride some week night if it was the week of long slow run with your daughter? See how long you can go....have her make up a chart or something and watch little chick flicks (that is a name my girls & I use for the 10 year old girl type movies).

Some of my kids like to hang with me when I do easy aerobic trainer rides not 5 dog panting ones (their name for hard interval type stuff). They change channels, adjust volume & fan, get me water. We have a lot of fun actually. We talk and have time together.

Seriously it would be a fun night if you can get used to longer trainer rides.

Hey... can your 9 year old ride a bike as fast as you can run? There's a thought. Or what about roller blading?

You two could train together. That way you could get in a LSD with her... and then do a long bike without her.
