Subject: I did flipturns- 1st time!

Wow, I can't believe I have been swimming 3 years and never really tried to do a flipturn.  Well tonight in the pool the guy next to me just looked so elegant and graceful I decided tonight would be my day to try it.

Scared to hit the wall?  Yes.  Thus, the first 2 times I missed the wall completely and was just floating there with pool water in my nose.  But I didn't give up, I tried to do one every 100m just so I could recover and prepare for the next.  Next thing you know, I was doing them every 50 (in a 25 pool) and by the end of the workout, every time!

I'm still no expert, and sometimes I push off from the wall more UP than Forward, so I kind of jump out of the water like I'm doing a synchronized swimming show.  I'm sure the lifeguard got a few laughs off of me, if she wasn't concerned for me drowning.  But I'm going to keep working on it.   When I did them right, it made the laps "flow" more- I felt I was using momentum the right way instead of coming to a complete stop, hanging on the wall, and then trying to start again.  I never felt like I was gasping for air or anything (well a couple times) but by the end I was feeling pretty confident.  I recommend trying them for those of you who don't do them.  I was afraid of hurting myself or looking dumb, but I only did the latter and now I think they are fun and I look slightly less dumb.

Yay for flipturns! Congrats! I used to do them all the time when I swam in a master team, about 5 years ago!!!  Only just last summer I decided to learn them again.  They really do make my swimming easier and smoother. I too occasionally don't flip early enough and end up doing a somersault but it's still good fun

I used to push too soon and go to the bottom of the pool!  Then flounder to the surface for a breath!  So funny!

Obviously, you get used to it and it will straighten out.  Try to use marks on the bottom of the pool to locate yourself to get the right spacing.

I sill get worried about swimming too far and smacking my heels on the pool edge like someone mentioned in a previous thread.  I have come close, sounds like it could hurt.

Funny thing is, flip turns seems so magical to bystanders.  I have noticed more people watching me do that while swimming (or make comments) than anything else....

It's funny...used to do flip turns as a competitive swimmer 30 years ago, but was never that secure in them (nothing is worse than turning too soon and missing the wall...I used to primarily swim 200 and 500 free, so--in a 25 yd pool--there were lots of chances for that)...so I haven't really been doing them in the 10 months I've been swimming for tri training. But my last two workouts I did them for the last 100 yds and nailed them all and felt totally under control...funny how the body remembers stuff like that...

Keep up the good work, flip turnig is fun! Supposedly faster, may come in handy if you do one of those pool Tris.

When I first did flipturns, I ended up in the wrong lane!

Now I do them on even number laps to help me keep count!

OH NO!! I know I shouldn't laugh but I found that hysterical. It's the kind of thing I'd do!!!

Yay, congrats on the flip turns ! I remember dreading them all three years I was on swim team in HS. Now I'm much more comfortable, but I usually have at least one botched flip turn per swim session

Congratulations! On one of my first attempts I ended up skidding along the bottom of the pool on my back! I eventually got it, though, and can now do every turn for a mile and a half.
