What is on the bike now? What bottom bracket is on it? Need the 411 before offering advice.

And, yes, Campy is not going to work. Don't.........

9 speed or 10? Are there two cups attached to the frame or does the paint go all the way to the edge?

This determines what's compatible with your bike and what replaces JUST the crankset or more in-depth surgery.

BTW: Bigger cassette an easier solution for hills?

Also, look at FSA. Seller on ebay "bikemaui" usually has reasonably priced cranksets.

What is your cassette size?  Changing a few teeth in the back results in much lower gear ratios than changing the front by a few teeth ....... and swapping cassettes is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying new cranks.

You may have to scroll down on that link, but bottom bracket is there.  I suggest you bookmark Sheldon's website anyway as it has lots of useful information.

OK, cool. Sounds like you have an integrated spindle crank. Do you have these sticking L/R out of the part of the frame where the cranks go (the bottom bracket shell)? They're called bottom bracket cups, This is what makes the cranks spin inside that bicycle frame.

The Tiagra crank you specified in the OP looks like it'll do the job. Again, my previous suggestion about that ebay vendor might turn up an alternative.

Okay, so the rear cassette I have is an 11/23 Ultegra 10 speed.  Would it make as much/more sense to pickup a 12/27 Ultegra for 66 bucks and skip the compact cranks?

Sure sounds easier.  You don't need Ultegra either.  Pick up 105 and save a few more $.  You may also want a new chain at the same time, since you may need a couple extra links over the one you have installed now.

Edit: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/  This is another useful tool on Sheldon's site.  Allows you to play with different cassettte and chainring combos to see how it chnages the gearing you have available.  So you can compare what you have now versus a 12-27 or swapping the 53/39 chainrings for something like 50/34 with compacts.  Or any other combination as well.

And thanks so much to all who responded so far.  BTers are the absolute best.

Yep, that's where I'd start. You might also need a chain, but those are always a good replacement idea anyway.

BTW: Keep what you take off. Good for mid-season when you're REALLY in shape, flat courses or the trainer to get a tighter geared, higher speed cassette.

Not an expert (although I know enough to agree that changing the cassette is the better solution) but I'm curious--couldn't you just change one or both chainrings to make a compact without putting in a new crank?  Are the bolt patterns different between a regular and compact crank?

Yes.  That's basically what a 'compact' crank is--a 110 BCD vs. a 130/135 BCD.

If you are looking at the new cassette, Nashbar has the 105 for $60 and the ultegra for $66 right now.  Jensonusa has a nice Miche brand cassette for $56 that would work nicely.   Also save some money for a new chain - you'll need a longer one now.   If you don't have one, you'll need a cassette lockring tool.   Borrow or buy one of those so you can remove the old cassette from your wheel.  A chain whip is handy, but you can use an old peice of chain if you don't want to buy one.

Here's a decent guide on the procedure: http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/fix/cogsoff.htm

If you have a LOT of hills, you may still want to add the compact crank to your bike in the future, but the easier/cheaper solution for now is the cassette (like everyone said).

you can change out the chainrings, just get a 50 and what ever size you prefer for the smaller make sure its a 130mm. not 110mm(is compact) then later is the season (stronger legs)or for flat races you can change them out. Alot cheaper, FSA chain rings are cheap

A 130mm BCD crankset only goes down to a 38T as the smallest ring.  Not much benefit for climbing.  That is why the 110 BCD crankarms exist, so you can drop to a 34
