I met with a rep from Shimano and saw a demo of how their heat and form process works. Price was a bit high but according to the guy being fit, the felt like a nice pair of slippers.

Does anyone have any experience with shoes that aren't right off the rack?

I have the specialized inserts and love them.  They even come with shims to change the angle of your foot in the clip, which is a must to get your knees in the right place.  They are also easy to adjust so you can play with them a several rides to get it right.  I am not sure if the heated up form fit stuff can be adjusted after the fact.

Thx for the feedback.

I watched the entire heat/form process and the rep assured me that the Shimano's can be readjusted (reheated and formed) if needed. He didn't recommend going overboard on it, but said readjustments could be made up to about 5 times. If done properly, the first fitting should do it.

Would this take into account swelling of your feet during a 6 hour ride?

Great point.

I told the rep my objective (IM distance, fairly high mileage) and of course said his brand is known to be great road biking shoes.

Jury is still out, but I like the idea of getting something form fitted to my flat foot.

Of course I got a solid sales pitch, one point of which was a 'free' 5-15 watts of power due to less (or no) foot slippage.

I can't speak to bike shoes, but when I was doing a lot more inline skating I had heat-molded and that was nice. It is a pretty common thing for inline speed skates. Speed skate boots are very rigid not that unlike cycling shoes. I would think that having molded shoes would be nice. I don't know that it is as important as in skate boots, but if you're dealing with some foot shape issues it probably couldn't hurt.

Thx paddle. I am dealing with flat feet, and just want to get into something comfy.

Dealer mentioned that the heat/form technology is used in ski boots and inline skates as well as hockey skates - to indicate that technique has been around for a while.

Hey no problem. There are very few areas of outdoorsiness that my gear-whorism hasn't been piqued at one time or another.

So is this an insole for a stock Shimano shoe or a custom shoe?

Whole 'custom' shoe. Start with a shoe of a special type that fits you. The insole is heat/formable as is the outer shoe. Heat/form. Done deal.
