But, do you have a choice? Do you mean you really can turn down a promotion? What does that do to your carreer with your current employer? Does that technicaly say, "I have no desire to be more valuable to this company" and you're shut off where you're at now?

I view the promotion as something you can't back away from; I'm missing something here......

I just escaped Mississippi. I've been to ATL and do *not* like it - talk about a completely unfriendly environment to a) cyclists b) social libertarians. I'd say more, but I've been cautioned by the mods about bashing a specific area of the country, but I personally had a very bad experience living in the South and I simply don't want to live there. The only positive are the mild winters, and that's it.

Our office in ATL doesn't have anyone right now that's moving on anytime soon, either.

This is the quandary I face... I would have to give up a LOT - way too much - salary, benefits, etc. that I'm going to need later on to put these kids through college to either a) change careers at this point or b) move closer and take a similar, but much lower paying job in my field in ATL. I would end up in the same financial situation.

It just sucks. There are no easy solutions.

hmmm... yes I see there are some quandaries at work here:

Hate the South, but your kids live there

Like California, but can't buy a house

Job in Rhode Island, but hate winter

Sounds like you are going to be unhappy / restless anywhere you end up. That itself might be an issue worth addressing.

Housing for $120K in New England?  It will be in some far away place and it will be a fixer-upper special.  I have a 3 bedroom split level on a 1 acre lot, 70 miles west of Boston and it's valued at around $230K.  Anything under 200K is gonna definitely need work or it's in a crummy, crime infested neighborhood.

On the plus side, the cycling in central Massachusetts is fantastic.  I can go out for a bike ride and on some routes, only see a car every 1 or 2 minutes.  Lots of wide shouldered roads too.  35 miles east of me, half way to Boston is another ball game.  Houses are gonna average well above 350K for a basic starter.

If the housing market is an issue, combined with the weather, I'd say you'll be an unhappy camper.  I've been on the indoor bike trainer since November and the roads are just barely getting doable, but it's mid March and the daytime temps are in the 30's...so you can do the math.  Normally I don't get out riding until about mid-April so that's a solid 5 month trainer season.

There are tons of jobs out there.  This one doesn't seem to be the right fit (weather, climate, etc.)  There are tons of places across the country that would probably fit a little better.  Patience is the key.  If you like CA, move south (Toward San Diego).  There are many cities that could offer you everything you want (except maybe being near your kids since you don't like the south).

Houses are too expensive here and you don't get much for your money.

give it another year or three and affordability will return

I need a house in the 120K range. I saw a one bedroom condo for 99K... in a complex that floods. I can't afford it now or two years from now. Its just too expensive.

You need a better job. Or a time machine (say hello to 1982). And in regards to the kids and college: Remember, they can get loans to go to college. You can't get a loan to retire.
