I don't know much about Sacramento, but I can't say enough nice things about Providence.  The Mrs. and I have continually spoken about moving there.  We visit the state at least once a year and have a hard time leaving.

It is just so awesome, water, ocean, beaches everywhere.  Some definitely non-touristy areas you can go to.  Skiing a couple hours away in NH / VT.

Plus, if you move to Providence, you can run the Narrangansett 10 Miler with me in late July.

Then again, I prefer the East Coast for living...

you can also learn to speak in their funny little accent...

Right now, I live in Sacramento; however, an opportunity has come up that may give me a promotion to Rhode Island (Providence). Pluses and minuses from those in the know... Providence is comparable in cost-of-living to Sacramento, but houses are, it appears, significantly cheaper.

I don't think you can compare climates... LOL

My children live in Savannah, it would make flights back and forth simpler.

Climates are not the same, no  You will find that New Englanders are VERY different from West Coasters, even though both tend to be on the liberal side. I've really not spent much time in Rhode Island (just the bus station and airport in Providence) - Providence is small, not sure how much is "there". But New England in general is pretty, the coast is beautiful, and it's close to Boston (as in, people commute to Boston from Providence) and relatively close to NYC. I am also very biased against New England and Boston (aka the best city in the world)

Bike riding will be on more congested roads?   Closer to the kids is nice plus phone calls will be easier with the same time zone.

I have lived in Providence for the past 3 years--
Things I like:
1. small size-- easy to get around most parts
2. relatively little traffic (although beware I-95 of the entire extent between NYC and Boston)
3. great architecture
4. the East Side-- tons of small shops/restaurants, great running, Brown
5. beaches (VERY crowded on hot summer days, but there are so many you can generally find a good spot)
6. easy to get to both NYC and Boston-- if there is no traffic, you can be eating dinner in Chinatown in Boston in 45-50 minutes. If there is traffic, triple that number.
7. the Providence Airport (TF Green)-- SO much easier than New York or Logan.

things I don't like:
1. it's the northeast. I grew up on the west and IT'S JUST DIFFERENT. The air is different, the Atlantic Ocean is not the Pacific, and of course, the people are different. More reserved, more subtle hierarchies that you may be unaware of (i.e. what private school did you go to for high school, and what private school are your children going to at $25,000 per year?), and other various intangibles.
2. public schools-- apparently there are some "good" charter schools, but my kids are in catholic school.
3. the accent (sorry-- I just don't like it so much)
4. It's far away from the west coast.

I wouldn't knock Providence for it's small size. I think for being a relatively small city it offers a lot in terms of culture (RISD) and food and activities. The weather is fine, a solid 4 seasons.

Good luck

There's the little issue of medical waste in the Atlantic...

I'm just not a big fan of the water itself. I like the beach...

Its a very hard decision to start the application process; I *really* hate winter and there's a ton of it there. I mean *really really really* hate winter. As in I nearly go apesheot if I go too many days without sun.

Yes, there is a lot of winter there, but there are also definite seasons, which I happen to enjoy. And New England winters, are very pretty, albeit cold - you get used to it, really. Plus, on the ocean like that, the winters aren't as "dry" and dreary, like they are, for example in the northern midwest.

I have never been to CA, so cannot compare.  Am a native RIer and love it here.  I am 10 mins from (clean) ocean, within driving distance to Boston, NYC, skiing/boarding, etc.  I love the 4 seasons, don't love the extreme heat/cold

For me, the biggest thing would be to live closer to children.

Good luck making your decision, I am sure it will be difficult

Well for starters, you'd become a part of the "New England Mafia" and we'd welcome you into that (assuming you make it through the trial period of course).

Not sure about Providence itself, but my experience with RI is that the road markings basically suck.  You start out on "Route xx" and suddenly you realize you haven't seen a route marking sign for miles and you have no idea where you are or how you got there.  Fortunately, the state is so small that driving an hour in any direction puts you out of it.

In that case, a move to Rhode Island would make no sense.

Didn't you JUST move here? And if you "really, really really hate winter" than probably the LAST place in the US that you want to be is New England.

That's like saying you really really really don't like sharks and yet you want to swim in Tomales Bay everday.

I would like to own a house again. That's not do-able here. Ever.

Not sure how being able to buy a house but "really really really" hating the weather 5 months of the year is gonna balance out.

I'll be 47 this year. The idea of never being able to afford to buy a house - unless I find someone to marry/buy with - again - does not appeal to me. Renting is OK for now, but it doesn't make financial sense long-term.

Houses are too expensive here and you don't get much for your money.

In terms of housing market Metro Boston is not as bad as CA and RI is not as bad as Boston.

But winter might be a problem if you don't like it.  I grew up in sub-tropical climate but also enjoy the winter here in MA.  The relatively short distance to everywhere is a plus.  Not more than 2 hours I can drive from the city to the beach/ski area/casino.  Summer is hot enough for OWS and winter is cold enough to ski.  Fall is beautiful.

I need a house in the 120K range. I saw a one bedroom condo for 99K... in a complex that floods. I can't afford it now or two years from now. Its just too expensive.

I meant wait until the recession hits CA real estate full force.

OR

why not look in the Atlanta area?

I'm in SE-CT, but go to PVD frequently and know some of the pluses.

1.) Atwell Ave. Federal Hill. Great Italian restaurant neighborhood.
2.) Providence Bicycle. Old shop, wooden floors, crotchety skinny ex-racers selling, underpaid mechanics who are extremely skilled.
3.) NBW club. www.nbwclub.org is very active road group.
4.) Cyclocross: New England is the epicenter for cross in the US. Either us or Portland.
5.) TF Greene airport: Tons of availability, drive right up. No hassles, no fuss.
6.) Beaches: Seriously, it's easy to get to, well kept.

Winters are nothing anymore. I plowed snow 1X this winter and moved some slush with a shovel twice. Al Gore has fixed that for us (thanks for inventing that innernets thing too Al!)

Affordable is a relative term. Maybe consider $220,000 for a decent starter single-family home in a decent neighborhood.

Look at Cranston, Tiverton and surrounding towns. Check out www.nbc10.com for a local TV station, www.projo.com is the newspaper. www.ne-bra.org is our local USCF regional federation.

God luck with the decision. We'll ride together if you make the move.
