Get yourself a pair of dogs. I have two beagles that will not let me sleep past 4:30 a.m. They believe that it is their right to be feed that early and no amount of shoes or pillows will settle them down. Since I have to get out of bed I usually start my day at that time. I usually get to bed around 10 or 11. A couple of times a week I need a catnap to feel rested but otherwise I'm fine.

OMG!  That's what I need...or the Kuku Alarm or the Hide and Seek.  Those are cool!

This doesn't work with our dogs.  Monday, they were so tired at 7:30, they wouldn't go outside before we went to work.  Most days when I leave the house I just tell them how lucky they have it...sleeping all day!

Can't stand getting up early...I'm an insomniac to boot...if I went to bed early, I'd just be awake in bed instead of in the living room.

My last two jobs allowed me to either go in to work at noon (and workout betw. 9 and 11) or go home at 4 (and workout in the early evening). My new job doesn't allow for either option, so I've been having to set my alarm for 6:15 a couple days a week just to get in a 40-60 min. run. For me, snooze works. But I have done the two-alarm-clock thing for esp. early (or critical) wakeups.

My wife can roll out of bed at 5am and start training. I can't. I allow myself 20 min. just to wake up and read at least some of the newspaper before I head out to run. Once I get started, I'm okay, but it does take a whole lot of will power to get out the door for a run before 7am.

Here I am wondering how some of you work out in the evening. I can't bring myself to do that. I've always been a morning person, so it is no problem for me to get up at 4am everyday. I do go to bed no later than 10, though, and I'm usually asleep by 9 most nights.

One of my workout buddies is NOT a morning person and it took her a while to become one...Having someone to meet her seemed to help her a lot.

All of the suggestions seem to be good ones to help out, but I think you have to just do it. Get up, suck it up, and it will eventually become easier, I would think.

I love getting my workouts in the morning. It leaves the rest of the day to do whatever or get the second workout in

This would be me.  I usually start working out with a run or a swim at 8:30 or 9:00pm and go until 10 or 10:30.  I have tried to do early morning runs in the past but they just ruin my attitude for the whole day.  My body and mind don't wake up until an hour or so after I get out of bed.

I leave for work at 6:30 am so I don't see the kids but for a few minutes in the morning anyway  and for a couple of hours after I get home.  Thus the late workouts.  By the time I get in and cool down, a shower and a shave become a relaxing ritual and I am asleep by 11 or 11:30 and then sleep till 5:45.  It works for me.

Or make an alarm clock that sounds like someone puking on the bed.  That would get me up real quick.

Here I am wondering how some of you work out in the evening.

I liked it three years ago or so when I was getting off work at 4pm and home by 5...I had an hour and a half or so before my wife came home, so it worked out well. Even when it was dark at that time in the winter, I still went out for runs then. My current schedule just doesn't accomodate that so well.

I HATE MORNING WORKOUTS! Seriously. This has been a point of contention with my coach and I. He keeps telling me to do them... I keep pointing out that I don't have to. HA!

Now, one day a week I do have to get up to swim at 6:00 AM. I don't think about it. The night before I lay all my stuff out and I go to bed earlier than usual. When the alarm goes off, I remind myself that I HAVE to go as it's my only day during the week to get my swim in. I also remind myself that if I don't get going that I might not get a spot in the pool if we have hit capacity of our tri club.

I get it done.

And you know what, when it's 7:00 AM, it's not that bad.

Of course swimming is easy for me. I like it. You will NOT catch me running early morning. Unless it's the dead of summer and I have to run 10-13 miles before it gets too hot. On those days I did get up at 5:00 AM to go run. Yes, it was miserable.

Again, you have to want it bad enough to get up early enough to train how you need to. Plain and simple.

I always remind myself that each workout I miss is one step back in my training plan. It also affects how well I do on race day.

Once the alarm goes off, and if I stir, the dog claims her snuggle time (I'm single and that's all the action I get Tongue out). If I don't move, the dog won't. I think that I need to change my alarm clock to the annoying buzzer instead of the radio to get me moving.

I also need to stick to the same sleep pattern to get up in the morning, workout or not. Sleeping in is a pleasure that I allow myself once a week.

WOW! Didn't everybody realize that the OP is getting more than 9 hours of sleep per night.

Almost 10 HOURS (from 9:00-6:45)!!!  I know everyone is different, but even if you get up at 5am that is still 8 hours sleep with 1h45m to train.  I work 2p-10p and don't usually fall asleep until midnight and with 2 kids, it's 5am or nothing for me.  Most days it sucks fiercely, but my other option is not to do it at all.  How about joining a team challenge come April 1?  This month I am in a biking challenge and it's one thing to let myself down, but I will never let my team down..and this has been the singular reason I've gotten out of bed on some days.  (And I'm sure to tell them how much they suck...in a loving way) Good Luck.

p.s. Although not applicable to this question, try using the logs as it allows others to give you informed opinions/critique about your training.

This may sound strange, but I set my alarm for 4:30am and then a second one to go off at 4:50 if I keep hitting snooze. By the time the 2nd one goes off, I'm so annoyed, I just wake up anyhow. That has helped me get used to 2x per week 5:00 am workouts for the past 6 months and makes the other 3x per week 6:00am swims seem like sleeping in!

Here, here!! I do the same thing. I have 3 alarms and I set them about 5 minutes apart. The last one is the most annoying cell phone ring I have and it works great. I get up at 3:30am at the latest to drive to work where I can swim. I work in a large health club- bonus! I have to be showered and dressed and at my desk around 6:30am or so. I ususally start my swim workouts at 5am and I have a 47 minute commute. I go through my workday and then do my afternoon workouts anywhere from 3 to 4:30pm.

I hit the sack at 9am and pass out.

It takes a lot of motivation and hard work.

Why don't you try to wake up early a few times a week and consistently goto bed at 9am? You will gradually work you way into early morning workouts.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am seriously considering the puzzle alarm clock.

And, yes, I do sleep more than the average person. I have talked to my PCP about this and even had overnight sleep testing to make sure I was getting quality sleep. No problems were found.

I used to be the ultimate morning person....5:30 was oversleeping. I'd be able to get up, eat, play 18 holes of golf and be home by 11am....Fastforward to 4 kids, I work days, wife is a nurse working nights (and it doesn't help that I am now 41 and not 21)....and since starting my 'official' training for my first tri in May, I have not gotten up once for a morning workout. I just can't do it. Now I still can't sleep past 7 most days even if i have nothing to do, but I just can't drag my sorry butt out of bed at 4:30 for an hour run....ugh....

You guys must sleep better than i do. I've got to go to bed by 9:30 to get up by 5 for my swims. But it takes me a good hour to get to sleep and i wake up 8-10 times every night and takes a little bit to get back to sleep. So i have to go to bed earlier to get in 5 hours of sleep.

Usually up by 4:30 here....  always been a morning person.  In the winter, that puts me in the pool a little after 5:00!  Oddly enough, I typically have the whole pool to myself!!???  Laughing

It works well for me and then when I have 2 a day workouts, lunch or after work for round 2 is easy... I am a 9:30 bedtime guy!

up at 3:20-4 here. i have to work at 6:30. i have 2 kids, and i hate picking them up from school and taking them directly to day care at the gym. i try to keep it to once a week that they go to the gym with me, then on friday we come home, and they play in the basement while i ride the trainer.

i try to take a 20m nap on my lunch (yes in my car), which really helps. i pack up my lunch and breakfast for the next day while i'm making dinner, usually working in their lunches with that. i pack/iron my clothes AND clean the bathrooms while the kids are showering. i stretch after they go to bed by then it's 10.

the nights my hubby puts them to bed it's better, i can usually get to bed by 9:30! i do have designated "early to bed" nights--fridays and wednesdays. fridays it's like 8 or 8:30, wednesdays it's more like 9 or 9:30.

What got me to get out of bed was making the commitment with a group. The group would just hound you if you didn't.

Now it is not so bad. But for two adays one has to be in the moring for me, else I have every excuse in the word.

best of luck,

When my wife and I sat down to talk about my desire to do IMCDA, she gave me her full support but laid down the law that training could NOT interfere with our family time. As a result, I had to become a morning workout person. Depending on the week's volume, I'm usually rolling by 4:00am, but have been known to start even earlier. I did a century ride last fall where I was home cooking pancakes for the family by 9:15.....

If you are REALLY serious about wanting to do morning workouts, give it a couple of weeks for your body to transition. I no longer have to set an alarm and HATE it when I have to postpone a workout to the afternoon/evening.

Interesting. I'd probably get out of bed, too, if I had to share it with a whole group. What size bed do you have? And how many are in your group?

I routinely get up at 4:00 to get my training in before I leave for the office.  That makes for fairly early bedtimes.  I can't say that I feel fully awake at that hour, but I think it makes it easier to put my body through the workout before it has a chance to wake up and realize what is going on and be able to protest.  It's almost like a hostage situation.

I feel the same as most of you, I'm just not a morning person, and to make matters worse, I have always been a night-owl.  A pretty effective solution for getting out of bed early in the AM has been using my cell phone as an alarm clock.  I use all three of it's alarms, each one getting louder and more annoying.  Also putting it across the room works pretty well to get me out of bed.  I'm also on-call for work 24/7 so if I make my alarm sound like my ringer, I have to get up and see if it's work calling or not.

Well I work evenings and get off work after 11 p.m. and get to bed after midnight and have to be up at 5:30 a.m. for masters swimming. When I first started training, my motivation was not wanting to be embarrassed by doing poorly during my race. When I first started training I couldn't swim at all, so embarrassment was a big motivation.

Now that I have swimming under control I guess I'd rather lose some sleep than know I could have done better if I would have had the discipline to work out more. Also, Living in Hawaii, it's a little easier getting up knowing it's another day in paradise rather than facing snow, rain or cold.

but I did wimp out this morning and slept in. But I did my masters workout on my own after I woke up.

I probably wouldn't be doing tri (just be doing cycling) if I lived in a cold climate ...

I get up at 4:30am. Im actually not a morning person (dont try to talk to me if you see me at the gym at 5am!) but I like starting the day with a hard workout. I come into the office upbeat and ready to go and when 5 comes I can go home and relax. (unless its one of my double-days)

theres a lot of great advice in this thread, most of which I do to help get me out of bed when 4:30 rolls around. I have my alarm clock on the other side of the room, I drink a big glass of water before i go to bed (i acutally usually wake up having to pee really bad about 10 minutes before my alarm goes off, heh.)(i believe this is called an indian alarm clock ), I usually have a tasty protein shake waiting for me so i have a little something to look forward to, I always have my clothes laid out and ready to go, etc etc etc.

But as helpful as all this is, the most important thing is just getting your body in a consistent rhythm. it takes awhile for your body to adapt to getting up earlier...just give it time.

I personally enjoy working out in the morning, I think I'm more focused on the workout. I don't always have the energy for a workout after work and like spending time with my little girl when I get home. Being able to take her for a ride in the bike trailer or a walk is more relaxing knowing I've already put in my training time for the day.

If I struggled to get up in the AM, I think an alarm that opened the garage door exposing my bikes for the taking would be an awesome motivator to get the hell out of bed.
