Subject: Good Running Treadmill ??

Those of you that have treadmills at home that you run on, what kind do you have and would you recommend it?  I am well into the Clyde category so I need something that really can take a pounding.  The one my wife has is rated for walking/fast walking only as it has a small motor.

In the near future I will be Mr Mom in the AM and the only way I may be able to get runs in is with a treddy at home.

Thanks!

Tim

Precor makes good running tread mills. They are pricey, but have a good warranty.

As with bikes find a local dealer and try some out. Ask the weight limits, whether or not they can be used for running, and of course warranty service after the fact.

I bought a Reebok Vista 9500 a couple months ago for my wife and kids.  They've been using it regularly and really like it.  I haven't done any running on it because of my injured knee, so I can't tell you how it does from my own perspective.  Maybe I'll try a short run on Sunday on it and see how it goes.

It's rated for something like 350 pounds, and I found some favorable mention of this one on a runner's forum somewhere.  Anyway, this is a heavy, sizeable unit and sure seems very robust.  I had planned on setting it up in the upstairs of our home, but due to the challenges of getting it there, it has found it's new home in the 3rd bay of the garage.  I got it for $12xx with free shipping from sportchalet.com.

Learn from my mistake.

I bought my treadmill during my "couch" years and really intended it for walking. I never dreamed I'd ever be running, so I didn't pay close enough attention to the features.

The issue I didn't notice: it never goes FLAT. The lowest grade is 1.5 (which is OK for WALKING . . but sucks for running)

Other than that, the Norditrac is freaking awesome at taking a pounding. I've had it for about 10 years, have put thousands of miles on it and was over 300 pounds for most of that.

Precor 9.31.  I got it right before the winter started in WI and love it.  It is quiet and it has some type of shock absorbing belt, it is wider and longer than standard.  I also looked at the Life Fitness model, but my husband who weighs more than me, liked this one better.

We have one that we bought at Dick's Sporting Goods. It's a Horizon T800 that we bought in December of 2006. My husband and I both run regularly on it. WE LOVE IT!! It has been very reliable for us with no problems. When I started using it, I weighed 180 pounds and it did fine. We have it upstairs and you can't hear it at all downstairs. I think that we paid about $1500 for it.

True treadmills are among the best--they always make the Runners World list. Try to find a specialty fitness store in your area, wear your running shoes, and try out lots of different models. A good salesperson will be able to guide you to what you need, and a specialty store will be able to provide service later on (if you need it). And when you can get outside, a jogging stroller is a must, too. My kids always enjoyed going along. Just bundle 'em up and take lots of snacks.
