How long prior to the gun going off do you need to get into the water? Will I have to be in the water for 5min or more treading before we start? Is there any where you can place yourself where there would be something to kind of hold on to? Even with a full wetsuit on I still don't float and I'm sure I will be cold.

Based on last year you will probably be in the water about 10 minutes or so.  There is a small dock that everyone has to enter the water from, so they do get you in kinda early.  I don't think there is anything to hold on to, but you may be able to find a area along the shore line to grab on to, although I don't remember much but rocks along the shore.

Good Luck.

I was one of the last to enter (which I did on purpose), I swam to the end of the rows in the middle and held onto the kayak which there are many that wait in the back. The volunteers are very nice, they don't care if you hold on or not. I think it was about 2-3 minutes wait once I got there.
