They are rides where you should be nailing the pace you plan on riding at your IM race. I'm sorry but if you are riding 100+ miles at less than 20 mph, don't expect to show up at your race and bang out a 5 hour bike split.

One of those problems with bulletin board discussions.  The word 'pace' made it look like you were talking about speed rather than effort.

I am, or I was, trying to say that! Put back into context of my entire post, the main theme was/is effort. What I menat by this was that if you train that effort, the pace will come.

Daremo (Rick),

I'll be seeing you out there. I'm anxiously waiting for Princeton Sports to begin their rides so I can get a feel for the actual Columbia course before getting out there in May. This is going to be my first triathlon and I'm both apprehensive and pumped!

bryancd - 2008-03-19 9:36 AM Aaron, I never said "speed" I said "effort" as measured by either HR or wattage. Speed is variable dependent on terrain, conditions, ect (of course HR is to, but let's just keep it simple) so pace can't be the protocol. I will say that in my experience, and based on the examples which Rick and Fred listed above, that pace they demonstrated during these long, more race simulation effort rides was what they showed up with on race day. In my case, my long rides of 100+ miles done in my race aerobic zone all were 21-22mph average, and 22mph is what I averaged at both IMAZ and Hawaii. So again, I KNEW exactly how fast I would ride going into both races and it was dead accurate. I atribute that pace to the fact that I trained at race effort for so long and my pace benefited was locked in. I made this point in another thread we had once where I commented that a well trained IM athlete should be able to look back on their training and see their IM race in their pace results of their aerobic training. I think at the time I mentioned that the Ironman Fairy doesn't show up on race morning and sprinkle pixie dust around and suddenly we can ride 1-2mph faster.

Well, crap! There goes another one of my well thought out plans!

Welcome to BT!

I rode with them about a dozen or so times last year.  I have only done Columbia once and that was way back in '92.  This year I'm doing the bike portion of a relay.  Its a challenging course, but a fun one!

Bryan, I trained with the same principal's for IM last year on the bike. I trained and raced at the low to mid Z3 (150-160). I often times had trouble staying below the 160 mark as it felt a little too easy at times. Does this same principal apply to bike training for 1/2 IM as well? Obviously my HR would be higher in a 1/2 bike leg but do you still gain the most benefit from training at that 10 beat IM training zone?

For the long rides I think you always benefit from high end aerobic work but I would be doing more higher intensity bike work during the week to prepare for a Half. I race the Half distance on the bike in the low to mid 150's and have found for 2 1/2 hours, thats a manageable effort during the race, but I wouldn't train the 56 mile distance at taht intensity of effort.

bryancd - 2008-03-17 6:50 PM ...Beginners should focus on going the distance 1st and foremost but as training progresses they should push the pace a bit...

Yep... guilty. This is my third season and I've come to the realization that I'm still just try and complete the time in my program. If there's a 1 hour run... my goal is to complete the hour and that's it. Then, of course, I wonder why my times are not getting better.

This is especially true for me and swimming. I'm a clock watcher and just do whatever I can just so I can log the time in my log. Not the way to go if I want to improve my times now, and not just finish.

that was me with swimming. Just punching the clock and getting my laps in.

I have been able to focus on training with running . . . having a plan for every run and sticking to it. I have seen good results in running (especially for the amount of miles I put in, not a ton). I love riding and I am trying to be more disciplined with my training so that I can see similar results.

Sorry, are you asking me? I only started doing BT logs this year, but they are all there. Rick was refering to my long rides last year during my IM training.
