Yes, swimming is not my strong suit.

Practice will be in pool, tri will be in lake.  What color goggle lenses do I need/want?  clear?  gray? lavender?  blue?

Personally. I have clear, grey and blue lenses. The clear are good for the pool and cloudy days if you're OWS and grey and blue work really well in the bright sunshine in the lake or ocean.  I have many pairs of goggles though as I tend to go through a lot of them IE leaving them at the Lake, the gym or standing on them.  It's good to have a few pairs at least I think.

Actually I do the opposite.  I wear dark lenses (cool metalic looking ones) in the pool.  They kinda calm me and look great.

But I very specifically wear clear ones at races in the lake.  I have found they fog up a bit and it is damn hard to see out of the water so I want all the advantages I can have.  And for anyone who says you end up looking at the sun, you are missing a great technique.  When swimming toward the sun, you can see the sun through the water; keep the sun at the same angle means you are swimming in a straight line.

I too keep a mix, clear, gray, orange/yellow, and blue.

For some, the blue (especially the dark blue) makes it hard to see the orange bouys often used to mark the swim course.  I've not noticed this, but I haven't done an exhaustive analysis either.  I prefer darker lenses in the pool with the clear water and light bottom/sides.  If it's sunny, I like dark lenses outside, even if the water is murky.  If overcast, I'll use lighter or even clear lenses.

Its personal preference... I have two pair of goggles that I think are 15 years old, one pair is smoke the other is amber, I use whatever is the easiest to find at the time.

I will say that swimming outdoors using a colored lens is a little easier on the eyes.

I think it's mostly personal preference.  I like using blue to swim indoors in the pool, but it works poorly for me outside.  I can't see orange buoys.  I usually use clear to maximize the amount I can see.

I purposefully bought smoke-colored goggles for an open water lake swim a few years back, thinking it would keep the sunrise out of my eyes.  Instead, it turned the day-glo orange buoys dark green -- the same color as the lake water!  I had to remove them to sight the entire way, so it was a very long and inefficient swim.

I would suggest bringing a few pairs with you and testing them to see if you have any issues.  Good luck!

I always take 2 pair to races with me just in case but usually use the clear ones.  Plus I have an extra pair if someone forgets theirs.

I have the Speedo blue lenses and yes, orange becomes invisible. Buoys are completely gone into the horizon. Yesterday morning, at the pool, some woman came into the pool. I looked up and thought, "Yeech! What's up with that!" She looked completely grey!!! I took the goggles off and she had some kind of bad department store orange tanner stuff! Scary on so many levels!

You want to think about this on race day: Consider the direction you'll be swimming into the swim finish along the final leg of the swim. Obviously most triathlons start early in the morning so the sun is low on the horizon. If you are swimming directly into a rising sun it will be very uncomfortable without a tinted goggle- tougher to see the bouys and the swimmers in front of you too.

Two races around here where this comes to mind is the Bikesport Ann Arbor Triathlon in early June. After rounding the last bouy of the 1/2 mile swim you are swimming directly into the rising sun- can't see a darn thing. At least with tinted goggles it isn't as bright (you still don't see much, it's just more comfortable).

Another example is the Ford Ironman 70.3 Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon in Benton Harbor, Michigan. If you are a right hand breather in the swim predominantly you will be turing your head into the rising sun for about 1 mile of the 1.2 miles swim. Tinted goggles (gray) make a difference there too.
