Subject: sprint tri prep, suggestions?
Hey ya’ll, I have been training for sprint distance for about 2 months now. I am getting a little antsy; I really wanted to know if I could do it. So, I held a sprint dist tri for myself.
I have been fighting off a cough for about a week, it did not seem to effect me until the run.
I am hoping to race in my first “real” tri in August in the South Beach Nautica Tri.
The distance for the south beach tri is slightly longer than a regular sprint, swim 805m, bike 18mi, and run 4mi. Here is a break down of my attempt of a sprint tri.
Any comments, or suggestions are welcome.

Swim- 750m- time- 8:39, swam in my L.A. fitness pool.

T1- time- 6:66, I don’t have tri shorts yet, so I had to change out of my jammers, then put my stuff in my car, then start biking. This will get faster in the real race.

Bike- 12.4mi-time- 43.05, avg. sp. 18.10mph. This was done on a MTB. It was very windy, if its not I can post a much better time.

T2- 5.21- this time includes running .2mi to the start of my normal 5k course.

Run- 3.1mi- 27.09- This is my weakest point in the tri. (other than the MTB) I had a bad cramp at about mile 2, which is very unusual for me. This forced me to walk for about a minute. I used to run my bricks on a treadmill, but I will change that.

Total time- 1:30:00

Polar- Hr max 186 (94%), avg. 170 (86%)

After I was done I felt good. I have to muscle soreness, or joint pain. I think that I can finish the longer distance of the south beach tri. I train well above those distances for the swim, and the bike. I currently only run a total of 10 -11 miles a week. I will have to increase my running distance in order to perform well.

Thanks for any help, Mike

Last summer when I competed in my first sprint tri (1/3mile swim, 14 mile bike, 3 mile run) I had never run further than 2 miles nonstop in training. I did walk for some of it because of cramping.
Also, I never seriously trained for the running portion. All of it was mostly slow jogging.
But I finished!
With two months to go, you can easily increase your running volume safely to prepare for your sprint tri. Good luck!

Sounds like you will do just fine. That is a pretty quick av. speed on a MTB. got slicks on it? On the cramp: were you hydrated properly? Use the bike to catch up on hydration to prepare for the run. Only thing that I would suggest is to do more "real" bricks. bike to run mainly. Enjoy!

Thanks for they replies, I have been doin my bricks with a 10mi MTB, and a treadmill 5k. It is much diffrent when you run on the road as opposed to the tread mill. I think I was properly hydraded, I was using a camel back during the bike and the run. I will try and drink allittle more so I will be more prepared for the run. I use a hard pack tire on my MTB they are not true slicks. I will be getting some before my first tri. I usually avg. 19-20mph on a short course like 13mi, but it was very windy that day.

save yourself a whole bunch of time and don't change out of your jammers at T1, lots of people do Sprints in Jammers (myself included).

SAME.
I actually didn't don any clothing aside from my helmet until the run.

It's a long time until August.  I think you are ready to race a sprint now!

My suggestion for you is to keep doing what you're doing but find an earlier race to start your season,  and do a few races including the south beach this summer.

Thanks everyone, I am a going to get some tri shorts before my first tri, so no jammers.
I will be doing many sprints this season, since I live in central florida, I am very well situated.
I have a short travel to any part of FL, and we have ALOT of tri's all year around.
