Subject: Accessories for heart rate monitor?

Hi there, I'm about to order my x-mas gift of a polar s-120 heart rate monitor and I get to choose a free gift.  I'm kinda curious if this is a hint that I need some accessories for my heart rate monitor.

I can get one of the following:

  • bike mount
  • basic guide to heart rate monitors
  • pedometer
  • spectra gel
  • fat caliper
  • travel case

What is spectra electrode gel and do I need it?  I'm leaning towards getting the fat caliper, but do you think I should get one of the other things?

Thanks for your help.  I want to make sure that Hubby's x-mas gift for me is just right. ;-)

THe gel is for the monitor, but usually you don't need it - water is usually sufficient. It's that gel they use in ultrasounds - the blue stuff. How about the HRM guide?

When I got mine, they were offering a free extra strap. I don't see that on your list. If they do offer it, get that. If you use the monitor a lot, you will have to replace that strap in about 6 - 8 months.

Why not spend just few bucks more and get the S-150 with which you also get the bike mount, wired speed sensor so you can use it on the bike and get some basic cycling functions. You can get it right now from Tri Outfitter for $108.95 with free shipping.

Definitely the bike mount (assuming he bikes). I have the 120 and that's the only thing on your list that I've purchased. The HR guide would be good as well but I would recommend getting a more general training book (TTTB for example) instead, since it will have HR info plus tons more.

I already have a bike computer, so I don't feel like I need the extra features.  I don't particularly care for electronic devices such as HRMs or bike computers (I have a complete manual that I can't force myself to read through) and just want to find my max heart rate and keep it in the aerobic zone.
