Twice in the last 5 times or so I've gone out, my Garmin Forerunner 305 reads my HR linearlly to my speed.  The fast I go, the higher the HR reading.  Sometimes, it's accurate (like I in the middle of the ride),  but other times I'm cruising along at RPE 2 and it says zone 6.

Could this mean that the HR strap needs a new battery?

Anyone else see this issue?

No, my 301 just quits reading the HR when the strap battery gets low. But battery's are cheap, it won't take but a second to try that as a possible solution.

It could be a couple things.

1.  The battery

2.  HR and intensity/speed are linear to a point, but then you get to a point where HR starts to stay more constant no matter how much harder you go.  This point, however, is very high (Above your AT) and in no way would it feel like RPE 2!  So that's out.

3.  There is cardiatic drift.  Your HR can slowly move up as your workout at the same RPE.  Due to body heat and constriction of capilaries and dehydration.  At times, I can start in Z2 at a certain RPE, then move to Z4 for a while, but when I go back to Z2, I have to go at a lower RPE to maintain my Z2 HR.  Does that make ANY sense the way I wrote it?

4.  I have found poor contact with the strap while running will cause erronious readings.

Good luck...

A very low tech solution is to make sure that the strap is a little bit moist when you put it on.  I just lick the part that presses against my skin and it makes all the difference.  When I forget and I see my HR rocket up to 215, give it a little lick and your in business.

Thanks.  It could be 1 or 4.  It's not 2 or 3.
