So...
  • ..an E.R. physician colleague of mine reccomends a dose of Doxycycline the week prior to an open water swim to avoid Leptospirosis.

Thoughts? Experiences? Am I just a paranoid beginner?

There's nothing to back that up medically.

Try to find a triathlete who's every come down with Leptospirosis after a swim.  You're more likely to find a shark attack.

    Just relax and swim.

Hm. Not sure how one dose of antibiotic a week BEFORE exposure is going to help if you drink the bacteria. Maybe a round of doxy starting that night.... Are there any public health links/contamination reports or something like that available for the body of water you're going to be in? The RD might know the status of the water?

Yeah it's supposed to be 200-250 mg Doxy beforehand to prophylax.
No known issues w/ the 3 bodies of water I have races in this coming year but my Masters coach said her hubby works as some sort of environmentalist and the only body of water he forbade her to swim in is the Potomac River in D.C. where I'll be swimming in Sept. Yipes!

I don't think there's a snowball's chance I'll contract leptospirosis, but I sort of have easy access to the prophylaxis, so I might just take it anyway! Would hate to be the one person who makes the New England Journal of Medicine with my case study ( a la these guys...)

Using ABs as prophylaxis for a highly unlikely infection seems a bit irresponsible. The overuse of ABs is why resistance is building.
