How do you exhale while swimming?  Nose?  Mouth?  Both?  Other?

I'm currently experimenting to find what works best for me.  What works for you?

exhale through your nose (you want to see bubbles under water) and inhale through the mouth. Try to exhale under water finishing as you turn to breathe just before your nose breaks the surface of the water so you have more time to breathe in.

I like to finish my exhale through my nose just after I break the surface.  Kind of blows all the water from around the area so I get a nice clean inhale.

I had to answer other just to be different.  So why do those bubbles get trapped in the suit, anyway?

Jorge hit it exactly. The only anomoly to that is at the wall (in the pool), where when I'm doing a flipturn, I let a little air out the nose to keep from getting the upside-down-in-the-pool major nose dealio working. You know what I'm talking about.

I always exhale through my nose. Learned as a kid that it's a sure-fire way to not get water up the nose, especially during flip turns. Many years later it's just habit. A very useful habit, especially in OWS when you have to contend with swells striking you in the face.

I personally do both. It is mostly out ny nose but if I hadn't gotten rid of the air by the time my face breakes the surface I finish with the mouth.

I have to say that you should exhale however you feel comfortable exhaling. There is no "correct" way to exhale. If you have trouble with water getting up your nose then it is good to exhale through your nose. If you are comfortable breathing out your mouth then that's the right way for you.

Personally, I exhale through my mouth just before I turn to take a breath. A small amount of air exhales as I put my head back in the water but I exhale explosively just before I take another breath. I breathe every stroke on my left side and have never had a problem with being short of oxygen or water going up my nose.

The most important thing is to relax when you are swimming. Finding a comfortable breathing pattern and technique is crucial to a relaxed and efficient stroke.

Just my $.02!

I exhale through my nose, mainly to reduce the chance of that rare deadly amoeba making it's way up my nose.

Out through my nose only, If my mouth is out of the water while I'm swimming it's taking air in.

Is it wrong to constantly exhale (from mouth) when my head is under water, then turn to inhale? Should I be holding my breath and exhaling all at once?

Long steady swims, I exhale through my mouth underwater. If I'm doing intervals and working hard, it's both mouth and nose underwater. Get it all out before I breath in. When I taught swimming, it was always breath out underwater, not out and in above water. Takes too long and wrecks your stroke.

I'm a bilateral breather - every third stroke, so I have a nice pattern of breathe - hold - blow going.  I find that I can completely clear my lungs on the blow out if I do it through my mouth rather than my nose. That means I get get a good clean breath and more oxygen in when I turn to breathe.  The only break in the pattern is at the wall for the flip.

Beats me.  I just breath naturally and don't think about it.  I 'spect both becuase that is what I do with I breath naturally.

i breathe bilaterally also (every 5 if going real slow, every 3 if going moderate. fast??? i have NO idea cause I never swim fast...) I breathe out my nose mostly, but I let it out my mouth too. I never thought about this before, until I got this horrible nose cracking and dryness from chlorine. I briefly contemplated getting nose plugs, but tried just breathing out my mouth to see if I could do it and it was extremely uncomfortable. Got over the nose cracking, and still breathe out my nose mostly. just more natural.

I breath out of my mouth the whole time my head is under water. Then I breath quickly out of my nose just as I break the surface to make sure no water goes up the nose. Sounds complicated, I know, but it's how it just naturally happens for me.

I'm a nose breather...but I exhale everything as I'm taking my strokes.  This could be because I'm a really slow swimmer so I have time.  I tried breathing out the mouth, but I am not coordinated enough to breath out and then rotate to inhale without swallowing a ton of water.  That burning lung feeling is so overrated.

I breath through the mouth except on turns to clear my nose. My face looks really goofy when I'm swimming though because my mouth is open the whole time my face is in the water...

Agreed ^^^^

Normally, I blow out my nose, but if it is time to breath again (@ every third stroke) I use both. However, as everyone above I try to use my nose to exhale and inhale through my mouth.

Honestly?  I've never thought about it, or noticed when I swim, and I truly couldn't tell you what I do.

This is pretty much how I've always done it (since competitive days 30 years ago). I'm sure I'm probably also expelling air through my nose initially, but, yup, I've always done the opposite of the "explosive" release of breath right before turning to breathe in.

Thanks for all of the replies.

In the past, I had been doing the exhaling from nose but only the explosive type as I was rotating my head.  I've kinda figured out now that I was holding my breath during the other parts of my stroke and this probably was tensing me up.

I tried the constant exhale from the mouth yesterday.  It seemed to work well.

Today I tried the constant exhale from the nose and sometimes the mouth (but always from the nose).  I'll have to say it felt better and I was more relaxed with it.

I'll continue with the constant nose exhale and see if the relaxed state continues.
