So I live in New York and the weather is starting to look better and for the first time I rode my bike outside with my aero bars and man was it tough! I was wobbling all over the place. Does it just take time to get used to it or does there need to be some re-adjustments?

Well, it's impossible to critique your riding, as you didn't include a video...heh..that being said, getting used to aero-position is not a 1 ride endeavor.  If you are properly fitted, you should gain the ability to control the bike with more time in the saddle.

If you are really brave, you can post a picture of yourself in the aero position and some of the more qualified peeps can at least dissect what looks right and wrong.

Give it some more time, and that's great that you can finally get outside again!

Ditto,

Assuming your weight is properly distributed (fitted), yes it should get better. More weight over the front wheel will make steering seem twitchy. You will probably build confidence fast if you can stay relaxed

Try steering with your hips. If you do it right, your corrections should feel more subtle. What I mean is you will steer by subtly shifting your weight. Its also okay to use the horns to corner.

hope this helps

Handling the bike will get easier. Remember how wobbly you were the first time you ever rode a bike? Give it a few rides and you will be steady in the aerobars. It just takes time.

Best of luck!

YES! Bike handling skills get much better the more you ride. I think I posted nearly the same thread 4 months ago as I was wobbling everywhere, going downhill scared the crap out of me in aero, and I couldn't get to my water bottles without wobbling all over the place.  Between both outside and trainer riding (practicing things like I would do them outside as far as grabbing bottles, etc.) I got A LOT better at the bike handling skills, and it didn't take forever.  I have no problem getting to my behind the seat bottles now, I can spend a whole ride in aero for the most part, and am now starting to practice the whole mount/dismount with shoes staying on the bike...you will get there! Just keep riding!!

Ditto on the fit though--gotta make sure that was well done first.

Riding Aero is like playing a video game for the first time - there's a learning curve.  At first the controls are very touchy, you can crash real easy, but the more and more you play (spend time in the saddle) the better you will get.  I spent a few bike rides around my neighborhood before venturing onto busier roads.  It took me about half a dozen rides before I felt really comfortable.

Oh, and watch out for bumps and potholes late in rides.  What happens with me is I get more and more comfortable (maybe lax even) with holding onto the aerbars and I end up just resting my hands on them.  And then all of a sudden BAM! I hit a pothole and the bike jumps to one side and I'm like holysh*t!  Ever since a few of those mishaps I hold onto my aerobars a little tighter and never just rest my hands on them - unless I first look up and confirm a nice stretch of flat, straight pavement.

I am new to aero bars as well. I put tem on last fall and after 10 rides the stability started to come. This spring it was much better but the wind has caused me not to use them as much. On a long ride Saturday I used them 25% of the time. The turns and fast down hills are not comfortable yet.

The next question I need to figure out is: Is it better to have the shifters in the aero bars for or leave them be for a hilly course? IMLou.

Of course it get easier!  Look at everyone else - they don't wobble.....

Just like anything else new, ice skating, bikeing, skiing, snowboarding.  You will learn to control it.

I was SUPER wobbly the first couple rides and almost crashed several times!

Hang in there - it will improve!
