Veteran 240 | Subject: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? Quick question, I am trying to figure out how to work two a days. I ususally work out during my lunch break...except on Tuesday and Thursday when I swim after work. I want to capitalize on my Tuesday and Thursday lunch break and do some sort of of workout then without compromising my swims in the evening. Would it better to run, bike or strength train earlier in the day when I am going to swim in the evening. Right now my schedule is as follows Monday - Bike/strength (lunch) Tuesday - Swim (evening) Wednesday -Run/strength (lunch) Thursday- Swim (evening) Friday - Bike/Run (lunch) Saturday - Off Sunday - Run (morning) Um, I take like 1.5 hour lunches which is why I can fit that in..but I want to change it so it looks more like this Monday - Lunch Workout Tuesday - Lunch Workout & Evening Workout Wednesday - Lunch Thursday - Lunch and Evening Workout Friday - Lunch Workout or Day off Saturday - Mid moring workout or day off Sunday - Mid morning workout (long run day) Any suggestions on how to best work those two a day workouts? |

Member 587 | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? First a disclosure: I am a believer in the strength training component of any training plan. I do most of my strength training early AM. Having said that, I would either split the swim days from the strength days or swim first. I lift 3 days/week & swim 4 days. On 2 days the 2 disciplines overlap, however I try to make those swim sessions my shorter days. Since there are only 2 swims listed it might be best to get the benefit of a good swim rather than lift first & then swim. Based on the schedule you have listed in the post, personally I would simply shift the strength workouts to the Tues & Thur evening slots. |

Member 20 Huntingdon, UK | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? My schedule looks a lot like yours with some different mixes in there. Monday- AM Swim, Lunch Strength, Evening Run Tuesday-Am Swim, Lunch Strength, Evening whatever I need work on. Usually the bike Wedsday-Am Swim, Lunch Strength, Evening run. Thursday-Am Swim, Lunch Strength, Evening Martial Arts Friday-Am sleep in till 0630, Lunch eat food at desk, Evening Bike Saturday- Brick work out. Sunday-Church. I only get to swim for 30mins each morning. As my pool doesn't open till 0630 and I have to be at work by 0730. So I get in there and just swim as far as I can. Running is uaually 4 or 5 miles at a time again because of time restrictions. I bike in the evenings thanks to my new indoor trainer. Need a computer to tell me how far I am going though. I work out at lunch for 1 hour. (Time again) Monday-Back/Bi's Tues-Chest/Tris Weds-Legs Thurs-abs/core I have to do strength training because of my job so I spend more time doing that then anything really. I spend the least amount of time bikeing, while running and swimming are about equal. I plan to incorperate more biking into my training however. Edited by scraptastic08 2008-04-08 9:31 AM |

Master 1472 | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? Your current schedule has 2 swim, 2 bike and 3 run sessions. Personally I would ditch all the strength sessions and add another swim and another bike (oh, please dont make this another one of THOSE threads, just my opinion). At the very least another bike session should be added. I feel 3 run sessions is negated by lack of bike fitness. Being in superb run shape is no good if you are wasted when you get off the bike. |

Veteran 240 | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? Unfortunately the ONLY time I can swim is after work, I have to commute 1.5 hours to work, so that lunch time is a crucial free time...after my 1.5 hour commute home I can do a swim at the indoor pool near where I live...thats why I am trying to figure out what to do earlier on that same day without messing up my swim workout, oh and I can ONLY do strength workouts during work...free corporate membership at the gym..thank goodness!! Once the weather gets nicer, and the days get longer (probably by the end of the month), I will DEFINITELY be doing more bike workouts in the evening. However, right now I am just trying to figure out what to do with the empty lunch sessions on days I swim. I like strength training so I dont see myself cutting it out...hmmm...lets seee..how about this, oh I by the way, I am training for a sprint Monday - Bike (lunch) Swim (evening) Tuesday - Strength Wednesday - Run (lunch) Swim (evening) Thursday - Strength Friday - Run/Bike (lunch) Saturday - Day off Sunday - Long run |

Is this because you end up diminishing your second workout if you aren't fresh (and thus, can't ramp up to the same level of intensity as you normally would)? Or is there another reason that I haven't thought of? I ask because I feel that sometimes my 'second' workout of the day is actually stronger (might just be perception) than my first. |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? If you've got 1.5 hours, why not at least do a short run or ride before your strength sessions--even 20-30 minutes will help. And how long is your long run? You might be able to do that as one of your runs during the week one day and use Sunday for a long bike (which you don't seem to have time for in this schedule). |

Elite 2915 New City, New York | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? Yes, of course it depends on the intensity of the first w/o) and time between workouts. Nutrition also plays a part. With day/ night workouts, as in your case maybe even more so. e.g. your diet may provide you that added "boost" you feel.

Elite 2423 | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? If I do them it is normally a swim/bike or swim/run. Sometimes I can manage a bike/run brick. I rarely brick, I normally do two-a-days. |

Honestly what I do is mixed up based on what I can do each day trying to get 3 swims & runs & 4 bikes in with 2 strength training...tough juggling and I don't run back to back days unless it is the only way it flows. |

1072 | Subject: RE: Two a Days - What workouts do you do? Afer some trial and error, this is what works for me: Monday: Swim AM/ Bike PM Tuesday: Strength AM/ Run PM Wed: Swim AM / Bike PM Thurs: Strength AM/ Run PM Friday: Swim (Long)AM Sat: Long Bike AM (Usually 4 -5 hours) Sunday Strength AM / Long Run AM Strength Training is upper body and core with no lower body. Local fitness center with a pool opens at 5:00 AM so I can get either a full swim or a full strength workout in before I need to be at work at 8:00 AM. Bike or run is on the trainer/treadmill if the weather is real bad. If not, it is outdoors which means some parts of the year it is after dark. I use lights for biking or running. |
