i went to the mall the other day looking for a pair of new running shoes because i thought someone there might be an expert or at least some experience on the types of shoes available. i wore the shoes i normally jog in, and told the kid i need something that comes in widths and has a lot of cushion in the forefoot area because thats where i seem to land when i run. he says "dude, noone runs like that, everyones heels hit first". i showed him the bottom of my shoes and you can plainly see that i have a slight under pronation and all the wear is in the forefoot. his response was that the dont make a shoe for me, and since i dont live anywear near a running shoe specialty store, i cant find anyone to call him a liar. question for anyone that knows their shoes-- which model new balance or asics ( or brooks i think come in widths) have the most shock absorbsion in the forefoot and what online store do you think is the best for price, shipping, service??

The mall is the least likely place to find an expert in anything, except maybe marketing. Of course there runners that hit forefoot first.

It's difficult buying shoes online, but since you don't have a stare with the proper guidance there, I would recommend this guy:

Jamie Dick PT, SCS, CPed
Board Certified Clinical Specialist Sports Physical Therapy
Certified Pedorthist Director of Therapy Services
Owner

He holds court over on the Runner's World Shoe forum and is extemely knowlegeable, qualified and helpful. He has a website http://www.footrx.com/ with competitve prices, and should be able to recommend the proper shoe to you.

Well, I used to sell shoes for 6 years, but that was some time ago so I'm not up to date with some of the current models.  I personally wear Asics, but from my experience, if you are looking for a shoe with widths, New Balance is probably the way to go.  They sell shoes in 2E and 4E widths.  The 4E is REALLY wide.

The only down side of this is that IMHO New Balance's cushioning system is not very good.  Personally this is where I think Asics and Brooks stand alone as 'running' shoe makers.  Mizuno is also very popular here in Japan, but I really haven't had any experience with them.

If you underpronate be sure that the shoe you select doesn't have any pronation devices.  The most common of these is a 'dual density' rubber on the inside of the heel, it's usually a grey color.  This rubber is harder than the white EVA and therefore prevents a pronator from rolling in too early after their heel strike.

As for shops, I think www.runningshoes.com has a good selection of widths and sizes and also can provide you with some information on each shoe.  However I don't live in the States, so there may be a better place to buy them, but I think this shop was posted on a thread some time ago?

I hope this helps??  If not, keep firing the questions!!  I know how you feel, it's really hard buying stuff that you don't know about.  I'm having the same problem with bike gear now...I have NO idea!!

Runners World has a list of speciality running shoe stores

http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-52-74-0-1048,00.html#...

I would suggest if there is one close to you, get thee there. The people in the mall stores have no clue about running shoes. I used to drive an hour each way to get to a running store that knew what they were talking about.

Good Luck

he is talking pants as you should be landing on the front of your foot not the heel as landing on your heel creates a braking effect...so go back and tell him that I said real runners land on the front of their feet

however, i am not sure that padding on the forefoot will help the problem if u are underpronating as that is solved by righting the arch suppport, there must be a proper running shop around somewhere, it would even be worth travelling further out just to get the right shoe otherwise u are gonna end up with one nasty injury?

Unfortunately, to my knowledge they don't make forefoot-landing specific running shoes... but they might look something like this if they did:

There was an article in runners world in November (I believe) advocating forefoot running style referred to as "the Pose" as a faster style.

A small percentage of people will run this way naturally and to an untrained observer they slightly resemble high-stepping Lippizaner horses.

Is your heel wearing at all? If so on which side? Does your knee feel like its collapsing in slightly when you land?

Do you land on your heels running downhill?

I am definitely not an authority on running shoes, but I know enough to seeke the best advice in order to get proper running shoes for my feet.  I also know enough to stay away from shoe stores located in shopping malls, especially the ones with pimply faced sales people who exclaim "dude...".   Log onto the nearest running club in your area and ask about the best running store.  The running community is close knit and everyone is more than willing to help fellow runners.  If you can't get information this way, find the nearest running specific store in the yellow pages of your phone book or on the web.  Even if you have to drive a hundred miles; it will be worth your while.

I don't know where in Florida you live. MapQuest put Englewood either near Sarasota or Jacksonville. Anyway, here is a link to a store called Fleet Feet. Very knowledgable people. It's in Stuart, not real close to either of the above cities. However, I thought maybe you can just give them a call and get some advice over the phone.

Asics have worked well for me, but they do not seem to last very long (200-250 miles). Mizzuno is also pretty good, but hard to find unless you hit a specialty store.
