ok here is the deal. I am new to tris and want to get into it. I love the thought of being able to tell my self that i have push myself that far. I started training last with TNT when I went into A Fib (half my heart stoped beating). I took a while off and now this is my first week back training. I used to be in the army so running is not that bad for me , althouh I am a little out of shape and only running 2 miles at a time. The bikeing scares me because everytime I get on that thing I fall (because of my snap ins) . My question is I want to try and do a race at the end of june do yall thing I cane be ready by then? I am planing on working out six days a week

Let's get the ball rolling:

What's the race distance?
Can you swim?
What's your race goal (i.e., just want to finish, etc.).

Tentatively, I say sure -- go for it!

<-- In no way qualified to help with the "can you be ready piece" since I'm new myself, but -

For the part about the bike:  Take your bike into the lawn, and ride in the grass until you're comfortable clipping in and out with either foot.  If you fall (and you might) it will be on relatively soft grass instead of concrete or asphalt.  You might get some strange looks from your neighbors.....but to hell with 'em.

I think you should be fine. If the pedals scare you switch them out for some flat pedals. I have seen people ride beach cruisers in sprint tri's so not having clipless pedals won't be anything strange.

Well, you've basically got the tri in the bag then.  You can swim it and you can run it.  You'll finish.  On the bike, I might respectfully disagree with the poster on grass as being your FIRST step.  I'd get myself situated in a doorway or put the bike on a stationary trainer, and clip in/out/in/out a BUNCH of times until you can do it smoothly.  You'll get it down, don't worry.

Practice BRICKS by the way (do a typical Bike ride, then hop off and run for 5-minutes or so.  Gets you used to the feeling of running after biking, which can be strange at first).

Welcome and Have fun!

OK - this is simple - you say you can already do the swim easily (by 100 m) and you can do the run (2 miles is what you are running now) so the bike is the question.  Your siisue seems to be that you are worried about falling when you unclip or stop.  Simple.  Don't stop.  Get on and ride until the end of the race - unclip early and then get off.

Seriously, you just need to practice getting in and out until it becomes second nature.  If you have a trainer, or can borrow one, set your bike up and continually clip in and out until it just happens without you having to think about it.  Look at it like this.  Do you ever use a hammer to build things?  When you swing the hammer, do you think about what you are doing while you swing it?  Probably not, you have probably swung the hammer enough that you hardly give it a second thought as you do it.  As carpenters get better and better, they aren't even considering what they are doing as they swing a hammer.  Just keep doing it.  When you get good at it on the trainer, take the bike outside and practice getting in and out (find a parking lot that has no cars in it).

To make it easier on myself, when I am coming to a stop, I unclip my foot (usually my left) then as I come to the final brake I use the momentum of the bike stopping to propel my body forward over the top tube and I come to rest on my unclipped foot.  If I am going to start up again (at a stop sign) I leave my right foot in.  To make sure you are steady - lean most of your weight and the bike to the side of your unclipped foot.  Just gonna take some practice, and you'll get it.

x2. Since you have/had a heart condition, I would definitely talk to a doctor for clearance if you haven't already done that.

You can finish. Id swap out the pedals for a while until you are a little more comfortable... you could also use one platform, one clipless until you get better at em.

Anyway, keep training! I think you will be able to finish the race. Sounds like you are dedicated enough! Falling seven times and keeping going shows some heart!

You'll be ready!  I'd start with the doorway/trainer suggestion for clipping in and out.  Once you've been successful with that take your bike to a flat road with very little traffic (an empty parking lot?) where you have room to ride and plenty of space to start and stop several times over.  You'll get better with practice... and during the race you'll only have to unclip once .

I used a trainer to get decent at the ins and outs, then just took to the parking lot, plent of open space for me to be able to look down to clip in.

It seems that if the ticker is Dr. approved you are ready to finish today with flat pedals. Just spend a weekend day in the early morning at a business suite where the parking lot is all yours, and don't ride home till you have it down.

Take your time getting into the swing of it, and enjoy every step. If you don't enjoy it you won't stick with it, and sticking with it is the major point right?

Oh oh oh... I can totally relate to the clip in thing. Two things have helped me with that:

- lots of riding practice where I clip in and out A LOT

- cheating

When I say "cheating" I mean, if there's a chance I might need to clip out for any reason, I go ahead and clip out my left foot (my stopping foot) and ride with it kinda braced/resting on the pedal.

When I'm approaching a stop, I unclip probably close to 100 yards before the stop. If I'm on a bike bath and there are pedestrians on the path and I think I might need to stop suddenly, I unclip.

And, most common for me, if I'm going up a steep hill and worried that I might need to stop mid-way up, I unclip at the bottom and ride up. This has given me the "stop worry" freedom to go ahead and train while I get used to clipping in and out while practicing on the flats.

As for being ready by June... SURE! Well, depending on the race, but I don't see why not.

I agree with the practice of clipping and unclipping. Another option is to change the pedals to the kind that do not have clips. I adjusted the tension on my pedals so that the shoes would clip and unclip a little easier.

You will do great. Sign up!

Oh and i found these pedals I am going to get next paycheck.... They are both platforms and clips. One on each side of the pedal. So I can use the platfrom to get started and then clip in once I am going.. So that will help out alot I think!

When I got clipless a couple weeks ago, I sat in my living room and propped up my bike between the couch and a chair and just clipped in and out for about an hour. I watched a movie at the same time so it wasn't too boring. Must have worked OK, the only time I fell was in my living room
