Subject: Telemarketers on your Cell Phone?
Yes, as you may have already heard, cell phone providers will be releasing your number to telemarketers. (This is an issue I could debate all day)

As of now AT&T (not including Cingular) and Verizon are the only companies that have communicated that they will not release their cell phone numbers. However all the other cell phone providers (i.e. Sprint, Nextel, US Cellular, T-Mobile, Cingular) will.

What can you do to avoide these annoying and potentially expensive phone calls?

Call this number from your cell phone 888-382-1222.  This is the national Do Not Call list.  It blocks your number for 5 years. You have to call from the phone that you want to block the number of.  You also can go through the web site at WWW.DONOTCALL.GOV.

This was on CNN the other day. They said the following: telemarketers CAN NOT call cell phones because these are phones numbers that we have to pay to receive their call (using up minutes) unlike home phones which doesn't charge by the minute. Therefore putting your cell number on the do-not-call list is not necessary and is actually causing back-up problems for those listing their home numbers which is available to any telemarketer. As also, as for cell companies creating a phone book with your cell number they also said it won't happen unless you sign a consent form. So, take comfort that telemarketers won't be calling your cell numbers.

I have to admit, I agree with Spanner.

Don't people now get junk mail text messages on their cell phones? Text messages cost $$$ too.

In my PR research class, i found out that phone survey's are getting less and less of a random sample of the public because of unlisted phone numbers and people only owning cell phones. Aparently researchers found out that just by flipping the last two numbers of a phone number they know, they'll get enough cell phone numbers to make the sample they get statistically representative of the public.

So whether they release your number or not, it looks like we are f&#$ed....

It is so scary that telemaketers have so much money to throw around like they do.

Now if they put that sort of money in to social infrastructure to help the underprivelaged make a go of things I would be happy to listen to some one prattle on.....

What I actually do is if their number is not programmed into my phone book and I do not recognise their number/name I will not answer.....if they are a legitimate caller they will leave a message.
