Subject: when is a brick a brick?
If I rode my bike, came home, gathered my stuff and drove to the pool and swam (probably a 30 min. transition-I'm slow!), can I call it a brick???

Hahaha....30 minutes...hmm...maybe alittle too long? =)

Purpose of a brick is

1) To allow yourself to get used to the transitions during races.  Changing clothes, changing shoes, grabbing caps, sunscreen etc.

2) Allow the body to get used to using different muscle groups in quick succession,  ie from swimming to biking,  bike to swim.

The longer yime you take,  you just lose the essence of getting a quick transition as your body recovers and recuperates.  You're not going to try and take a 30min break during a race right???

I think a 5 minute transistion is about right.

Good training, but not really a brick.  Straight from the water to the bike, straight to the run from the bike.  The point is to acclimate your body to the swift change in muscles, tempo and effort.  The 30 min of rest takes away from the brick, but was still good training.  Keep it up!

Mimi, you can call it whatever you want to call it.  Heck, I still call "running" "jogging" and I have not been arrested yet!  The main purpose of a brick is to train the body to go from one sport to another in quick succession.  However, there is still some benefit to be derived from doing two different sports even if there a half hour has elapsed between the time one ended and you started the other.

Great link. Thanks. The Long Run Emphasis Brick and Long Bike Emphasis Brick work gave me the direction I needed for time duration and pace.
