Ok, some GREAT changes to the bike course for Longhorn. Went over it with the Sheriff's Dept. today. The new bike course is posted on the www.ironmanlonghorn.com website. We eliminated 290, and now have only a short stint on 1704. It's almost all on quiet country roads now. AND, it's 56 miles It's very scenic, and it allowed me to eliminate the two parts I wasn't crazy about: 290 and 1704...

Tiki, for those of us in the stone age could you save it as something older than Excel 2007? Like, say, 2003?

btw I just did the route on Gmaps. The numbers don't quite add up so my route might be a little off, I just went by what was on the Longhorn site.

I updated my post above with an .xls for people who don't have the patch to read .xlsx files.

I got my numbers from mapmyride.com. They also show approximately 54 miles.

thankfully ,, I only trained for a 56 mile ride last year and it was that  little extra on the bike and not the heat that killed me

It comes up on Gmaps as about 54 miles, because they don't have the updated route around the Park. Bloor/Lindell/130 has changed, and they haven't updated their files. I drove and have checked mileage in the car (2 different cars), and it came up at 55.9 miles.....

Gilbert, at the end of the bike, has also changed from what they have on GMAPS. I actually use GMAPS to map out possible courses, and then drive/inspect them. The Gmaps for this course is about 2 miles short, it seems

my apologies...the wrong one was posted....just sent the correct one to the webmaster, should be posted tomorrow. When on Monkey, you take a right on Upper Elgin, then take a left on Young's Prairie, Right on 1704 and a Right on Balch....

It's a minor change, but adds mileage. Between that and the differences for Gmaps at Bloor/Blue Bluff and Gilbert, the course is 56 miles, or VERY close....

Hey Keith, have there been any repairs made to the bad roads on the route from last year?

they've repaved one of the roads. which roads do you feel were bad? I'm out there all the time, and most of the roads are in great shape. Lindell was just completely repaved too

Not 100% certain of the name of the road, but last year it was the only real problem road with potholes and gaping holes that were marked with spray paint.  I want to say it was between 40-45miles?

It was probably Taylor Lane, perhaps.
Taylor lane is now NOT part of the bike course.

I think the bike course is really great now. I thought it was great last year, but wasn't a huge fan of 290 or 1704.....

might even be faster now. For Blake Manor, you'll be coming DOWN it, not having to go UP it this year

If you could get a 7-10mph wind coming out of the East for race day, I'd really appreciate it.

Keith-thanks for the information on the bike course. Longhorn will be my first HIM and I'm really looking forward to it. We're lucky to have you organizing the race.

that's not what my wife tells me

Seriously, very excited about it. Got a list of things to just blow it out this year....

Did I mention Freebirds and Beef Kabobs, beer, ice cream, etc for post-race food?

Just booked the longhorn for post-race pics

The Freebirds Burritos last year were, without a doubt, the best post-race food I've had. Just did St. Anthony's yesterday and their Papa John's pizza and black beans with rice doesn't even compare.

I just mapped the new route as best I could on mapmytri.com

http://www.mapmytri.com/workout/united-states/tx/austin/669497417

it shows the elevation for all who are interested and it comes out to just about 56 miles...the mapping isn't exact.

For those that did the race last year and are familiar with QUADZILLA, how does it compare to the Windhaven hill?  1x, 2x, 3x?  Is the grade about the same?  Windhaven is my training hill and is only 2.5 miles from my house....unfortunately.

If I bring a Texas A&M hat, can we put it on the Longhorn for my post-race pic?

Ok, at the very end of the route, right before you hit transition pretty much... (taking a right into the park) there are two BIG hills. Serious hills. Nothing like them in Dallas.

But it's at the end, and not that long. When I saw the hills (there are two of them), I just stopped at the top before the downhill into it, and caught my breath. People passed me. Then I attacked. Went screaming down and worked it going up. I pass all the people who passed me when I was stopped.

Oddly... at one point, my quads stopped burning and I was just riding. It was odd and I don't think you can experience anything like it, unless you are on a serious hill.

Moral of the story: Do not worry about it! Be good at riding rollers, and the last two biggies at the end WILL not kill you.

The hill will get you more on the run because you have to do it twice. It is very similar to the Windhaven hill in steepness, but the Windhaven hill is longer.

Only if we get to set the hat on fire afterwards.

Ok, using the course that jschapman drew up, here are the elevation graphs in excel formats so that people can get a better look at them.
