I am using a basic waterproof watch for my swim and then put on my Garmin 305 for the rest of the race but am considering one that does the entire race but may not have GPS.....any recommendations? How are the Timex Ironman series? I saw one at Dick's I think it is the 150 series or something similar.

Thanks in adavnce.

You're going to get a lot of answers on this one!

I use the Timex Ironman 150-lap count with interval timer. IMO that will fit 99% of the needs of most triathletes (from a timing perspective). $35 at your local WalMart, juet get one and be done with it

Timex Ironman with 50 lap counter.

I have killed a few Casio G Shocks and other watches so I stopped spending $100 for a watch that has a short lifespan.

I wear that everyday and the pool, but go Garmin Forerunner 305 for runs and rides, if nothing else I get to work my left shoulder as I run.

Don't buy a Polar RS100.
My Nike HRM died and I jumped too quick on a RS100, POS.

Trust me, buy an Timex IM HRM.

The TIMEX Ironman watches and HRM are good, although some people experience issues.  But I also heard TIMEX is good at replacing faulty items.

My works well, except when in water.  Too much interference?  Seems more accurate when OWS with a wetsuit - guess the wetsuit hold the HR strap in place.

Are you looking for just a watch w/ stopwatch & lap functions, or a HRM as well?

I've been wearing the simple Timex Ironman HRMs for a few years - I've gone through a few of them, but I wear them as my everyday timepiece and I'm hard on them. I've seen the 50 lap models recently sell new on ebay for prices as low as $30-$50 (my last one was under $60), so if I don't mind replacing them once a year if need be. A bonus feature is that the treadmills at my gym have Polar HR display capability and my Timex chest strap transmits just fine.

Saying that, my last one pooped out on me in the pool - 1st time for that - but otherwise I wouldn't go with another brand/type of HRM unless I wanted GPS capability, then I'd go with a Garmin - I'm not fussy for the Timex Bodylink models.

For just a good timing watch with splits and functional ability, the basic IM 50 lap watch is fantastic, especially for the price.  As others have said.

I think the Polar 625x is the bomb! Every important piece of data you could want on the run or the bike is on your wrist.
