Jake is always a solid choice. Have fun. Nice frame at a great price.

What's your intended use? Triple might be overkill, maybe compact or cross compact (46/36)? Or are these leftovers in a parts box?

Also, V-brakes are OK for now, but if you go STI, the cable pull is different. You'd either be forced to go cantilevers or get a travel agent spool thingy.

Bar-cons should work, but I still like my STI brifters. Some say they're too finicky in the dirt. I've not had an issue and have laid the bike down packing them full-o-mud. Clean them out when I get home and they work just fine.

Have fun: I'll pass you on the bell lap :-)

The build is mainly because it is stuff I have built up on a frankenbike project that I never could get to fit correctly.

I have a few sets of old canti's laying around too, including some Mafac kock-off's from 1984.

I would prefer a compact double as well, but that's a down the road project.

I also have my eye on a chorus/record 9-speed kit that my friend is pulling off his Waterford to go full 10-speed record. That would be the pimp set-up

This is going to be a "fast touring" set-up. We're doing the whole Blue Ridge Parkway in 6 days this summer, and I think this will be an ideal set-up.

Here's the bike I'm stripping down (schwinn moab elite converted to roadie)

Yeah, that Campy take-off WOULD be pimpin!

Another consideration MIGHT be the wheels. Again, I'm guessing these are hanging on a hook someplace and you own them. But, if you ever go to CX tires, you want as much rim width as is practical. 20-22mm is best. If these are 18-19mm width, your tire looks less like "o" and more like "u" becasue you're pinching the sidewalls too much. You don't corner as well consequently b/c you can't lean the bike and maintain good control. Tubulars solve this problem.

Have fun with it! Light single track, fire roads, regular asphalt and racing are all do-able with a well built cross bike.

Yep, got the wheels already too.

I am thinking about building a set of wheels (never done that before) something fairly standard like open pro's or cpx-33's or velocity deep-v's on either ultegra or chorus, depending on what kit I end up with.

I am not sure that I am ever going to race cross, but you never know...

Building wheels: It's not too hard. Google "Rinaldi spoke length calculator" It's an Excel sheet which you pick rims, hubs, cross pattern and it returns the proper spoke length. DT swiss has something similar, but no where near as good on their website.

I've laced 3 sets now. Only ever done 3-cross. I love Velocity rims; strong as snot. Important when you weigh 225-240 through the year.

Dyads are nice, but Oh so heavy! I built Velocity Dyads with 105's thinking I'd race them. Overkill. I use them on my cross check built up for touring.

Get "Jobst Brandt, The Bicycle Wheel" for a good primer on building wheels. Or, Sheldon Brown of course has it pretty well laid out. The key is tensioning and relieving properly as you go. That and 2-3 good beers to keep you calm
