I have a Thule, but I think Yakima is good too.  2" hitch is a MUST.  I like having the 'swing away' feature so you can easily get in & out of the trunk with the bikes attached.

x 2, exactly what I have. Love the swing away feature. We have an Explorer with the hatch back window so I can put the rack down with 4 bikes on it and open the window to get out whatever I need.

I would look at the softride rack, REI and several others sell it. Seems like the best one and its not that expensive. You can lower the rack with the bikes on and they stay level really looks good.

To bad they do not make it in a 5 bike version, thats what I need.

Slight hijack and ? for johnnyk or anyone else. Is the 2 inch hitch really that critical? I'm in the market too, but I haven't had any luck finding a 2 inch receiver hitch for my Maxima. I really would prefer a two inch since my wife has one on her vehicle and would like to be able to use it on both vehicles if needed. Otherwise I'm going to have to get an adapter too.

I would not feel comfortable with 4 bikes on the smaller hitch.  I can't speak to whether your Maxima is capable of accepting such a hitch though.

I just bought a Thule (Roadway, I think).  It's for 4 bikes, but we recently tried getting a bunch of tri bikes on, not sure it would hold 4 since the bars are pretty wide.

As for the swing away, I didn't want to spend the extra dough for it, and I can easily get into my Pathfinder's rear area via the window with bikes on.  It does fold down for hatch access with no bikes on it, but that's only necessary when packing the car etc.

Just went from LA to Tempe to Sedona to Grand Cyn to Vegas to LA with a car full of stuff and a bike on the back with 0 problems.  Easy to install and take off as well, couple minutes or so.

Of course, my bike rode inside

ETA I originally bought a 1 1/4" model on clearance, had to return it since they don't make that size hitch for my car and no adapter (at least that's what UHaul said).  Honestly I feel better with teh 2" hitch anyway.

Do any of these racks have the ability to adjust the distance between the two supports that the bikes rest on? On the rack I just bought, and it looks like most are about the same, the crossbar on my bike is too short to rest on both supports. I had to balance the bike on one support and secure the front tire to the other. This did not work very well. I guess the other option would be to get a rack that the tires set on??
