Subject: Pre-glued spare tubular Q

Looks like I'm going w/ the race set-up this weekend. Spare is stretching. Been told to apply 2 coats of glue. i assume it'll at least be tacky.

Here' the dumb question: How, exactly, do I roll it up to put it in my jersey w/o it making a mess? Another. Since I have disc, I imagine I need a spare valve extender?? Anything else? A razor blade maybe? I've got the CO2 and adaptor.

thnx

To pre-gle a tublular, you need to glue it to a rim, let it cure for a couple of days and then remove it. The glue will be dry, so you won't need to worry about making a mess.

I install an extender and then if the disk flats, remove it before installing it. And yeah...a razor blade makes removal much easier.

I ride tubulars on the tufo tape instead of gluing.  There is always enough tackiness left after removing a tire that you can finish a race or ride without re-taping or gluing.

The tape is slow, though. It allows the tube to wiggle around on the rim very slightly, and that increases rolling resistance.

Jim -  What's the purpose of putting the glued spare tire on the rim? seems counter intuitive.

I did anyway.  Following you blind here

It's supposed to give you a little better adhesion than a never-glued tire.

Hmmm, I've never heard that you should mount a spare - just have to pre-glue it.

Mounting it serves a couple of purposes (of course, you unmount it before carrying it as a spare):

  • It distributes the glue thinly and evenly.
  • It pre-stretches the tire (ever try to mount a brand new tubular? Hard, huh. Now go and do that in the middle of the race.)

I'm using my old tubular as my spare since it was mounted and had glue on it. I bought new matching tires. Old tires, one was bad so I use the other as a spare. Hows that?

I folded up like Bryan showed last fall and haven't done anything with it since my HIM in October. Is it okay to go or should I do something before Sunday?
