Subject: SRAM 10 speed chain removal
Need to seriously clean the drivetrain on the tri bike. I'm using a SRAM 10 speed chain, 1090 I think. It comes with a "power lock" which snaps shut. Apparently, this isn't re-closeable and is a 1 time use unlike 8/9 speed which can be removed easily at will.

OK, I can order the $5 replacement link, but how do you get it off? I don't want to use a chain tool on a different link and add another powerlock to the chain. I don't think the chain tool will drive the pin of the powerlock either?

Alternatively, can you really clean the chain well while installed on the bike? I've always taken mine off soaking once in degreasser, scrubbing, rinsing, then a paint thinner soak and wipe. I've got one of those brush box cleaner things, but it's a total PIA and does a lousy job.

Found these:

http://forums.bicycling.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/671104717/m/26110915...

Couldn't find anything definitive on the SRAM site.

Might be time for a different (and removable/reusable) 10-speed chain.

I've got a SRAM chain on everything I ride because of the link they use. I use the same link over and over. You have to take hold on either side of the link and push the two sides together. If you have trouble with it, try using two pairs of needle nose pliers on either side. You should be able to see a cutout or notch on either side of the link. You need to push the pins in the direction of the notch. I'll post pic for you in a minute just to be sure we are talking about the same kind of link. I don't want to steer you in a direction that might get you injured if you do re-use the link.

Yeah, 9-speed Powerlinks are reusable.

Not so with the 10-speed version. That stinks for consumers. Well, until they find a reusable 10-speed chain...

Right, I've been using the 9-speeds for years and absolutely love them. Work flawlessly, shift great and I get good mileage out of them. But, the 10 speed clicks and LOCKS. I guess I could buy a Wipperman link, but am not sure if my chain is 6.1mm or 6.3mm. They have both....

I've always just used a chain tool...no need to replace links that way.

Not sure about the 10-spd  Sram chains, but I have blown up a few Shimano chains by trying to re-use the pins, rather than the "approved replacement" pins.

Right, and SRAM's solution to the snap pin is yet another "power lock" connector. No thanks at $4.95 a pop. I ordered a Wipperman Connex which supposedly is removable infinately like the old 9-speed are.

Yeah...I've reused Shimano pins and had no problems.
