Subject: 74 or 78 degrees?

Hi,

I think that it was either 1990 or 91 when I bought my first road bike.  It was a Peugot steel frame with Shimano 105.  I bought the syntace tribars and was away.  I later changed to tri-bikes from a soft-ride to a no-name aluminium frame with carbon spynergy wheels.

Now that I'm back into triathlons after 12 years, my problem is that I could get a cheap 06-07 model road bike (about a 74 degree frame) with either Shimano 105 or ultegra for about NZ$1500 and customise it, getting tri-bars, shifters etc... or spend way more and get a tri-bike with a 78 degree frame.

I don't want to spend the earth, so what do you guys recommend?

You could spend the same if you shop around for a used tri bike probably if your intention and desire are to have a steep angled seat tube.

Hi,

Yeah that's an option although unfortunately the used tri-bike market here in New Zealand is very limited.  I guess saving or ordering from overseas are the only options :-p

I didn't want to spend the money on a tri bike as I am not trying to qualify for anything. I bought a fast forward seat post for my race bike to get the about 78 degrees angle. I'm happy with my fit now so will go with this for a while still.

Check the clearance section at R&A Cycles -- several Quintana Roo frames (new/old stock) below $400.
