Anyone come up with a home-made solution to the aerodrink spillage?  The yellow mesh that comes with it is worthless and after a bump or two on the road, my arms are coated in GE.

Get a shower loofa thingy from Walgreens or Wal-Mart. Works great.

I attach my bottle to the aero bars with mini bungie cords. Then I used a plastic tie rap (it was part of the packaging that came with my new tire, used to hold it together) which goes under the bungie cords and over the yellow sponge. Very secure set up, easy to take on and off, no rattling, no spillage and very light...

If you are interested I can take a pic later on today and post it.

Depends if you need to refill during the race or not.  If not, its much easier to use anything from a chunk of swim cap to a latex/rubber glove.  If it needs to be refillable during the race without stopping, it becomes more difficult.

Many people use a loofa, I have never had issues with spillage or the yellow thing coming out. I stretched it out a bit and wedge it in sideways.

I've heard the loofa thing many times and I'll be giving it a try as my yellow-thing magically diappeared when I bike my bike back up after this weekend's race.

I'm a plastics guy, so I'll share my thoughts on ways to improve it. I've never tried this, its just what has been bouncing around in my head.

1. Heat up a knife and carve a barb on the rim of the bottle. Do it in a half dozen spots around the mouth of the bottle. Don't make the barbs sharp, because we don't want them to tear the latex/silicone/rubber material that will cover the mouth.

2. Trim a swim cap, glove, something to about 1.5cm larger in radius than the mouth.

3. Cover the mouth of the bottle, stretch a little and catch the top material on the barbs.

4. Hold the material onto the barbs with a rubber band, wire tie, or twist tie, below the barbs.

5. Puncture a hole in the material, large enough to get a bottle top into, for refills, or don't puncture if you don't need refills.

This is just an idea, I've never tried it. Be careful not to cit big chunks out of the rim when making the barbs.

The other option is to try to find a molded plastic top that would fit.  I'm thinking something like a gladware 1/2 cup cover.  You could also try to find a rubber bung plug.  http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/search.asp?search=plug&x=0&... I'm sure you could find something here.

If you used a rigid plastic threaded male cap, you could thread it in and create the female threads into the bottle if you were careful.   It wouldn't be pressure sealed, but the straw keeps that from happening anyways.

You could also plastic weld a flip top on.  I'm not sure what material the aerobottles are made of though.  Most likely HDPE or PP.

... okay, I have to stop now ...  back to real work ....

this drives me crazy too.  lately, I've been using a 52mm lens cap that I read about on ST.  This works okay as long as it stays on.  I've had to use a rubber band to make sure it stays on during bumps.  I lost my rubber band for this last ride and it was aggravating.

My buddy uses a thick sponge custom cutout to fit the whole cross section (all the way front to back, side to side) and that seems to work great for him.  I may try that.

None of this is necessary. The yellow mesh doesn't come rolled the way it's supposed to be used. Simply unroll it, then roll it back up like a doughnut.  It will never fall out if used porperly.

I've had no problems with mine yet.  Several 50+ mile rides with no issues.  I removed it, turned it sideways, and reinserted it.  Plus, I only use water in mine, with other hydration in my seat-mounted bottle rack.  I like having only water in there, so I can dip my fingers in if they get covered in Gu or GU2O and not have sticky fingers.  Plus, the water that does splash out right at the start of the ride helps cool me off a tad!

a couple or rubber bands and a normal bike bottle top. To refill while ridding just pull the top up slightly and shift to one side. It will stay to the side. Fill and then give it a nudge and it will slip back into place.

I respect everyone's innovation and all that...

...but seriosuly...

...a rounder, thicker shower poofie is all that is required.

I can pour on the fly and water never spills out.  I hated, HATED this thing after my first ride with the yellow thing.  Put in a shower poofie...it fits tighter...and the whole operation works as advertised.  Done.

2 suggestions.

When I did have a profile bottle, I put a small hile in the top of the collar, and put a small zip tie thru the hole, in thru part of the yellow thing.  it was easy to move to clean, and it would never come off.

When I got my new bike with only one bottle cage, I figured out that I needed a podium quest bottle to hold 2x the flid on the bars.

Not a solution, but if you want free replacement yellow sproingy things, just go to the bumpy part of a long course triathlon and wait a few minutes and they will come flying off the fancier bikes as they pass by!

Anyone come up with a home-made solution to the aerodrink spillage? The yellow mesh that comes with it is worthless and after a bump or two on the road, my arms are coated in GE.

I tried, successfully, a racquetball this weekend. The racquetball fits snugly in the top. If you fill it up completely, you may get some splash through the straw, but otherwise, this has been much better than the rolled up (or re-rolled) yellow thingy. My yellow thing flew out the other day and I got drenched. I then decided to try the racquetball. the raquetball diameter is 2 1/4". A kid's squishy ball could also work (i.e. a small nerf-like ball).

Hope that helps.

Home made aero drinking system:

Materials:
1. Take any waterbottle that has a groove in the middle (most do).
2. 1 x 12" zip tie.
3. 2 x Velcro straps. Go to a computer store like Staples, they have these velcro straps that are used to wrap computer cables together. Buy a couple of those.

Instructions:
Place the zip tie around the groove of the waterbottle.
Pull it almost tight, but not all the way.
Slip 1 velcro strap under the zip tie on one side, and one on the other side.
Now pull the zip tie all the way tight.
Wrap the velcro straps around the aero bars.

For the straw, you need it to be about 15" long (at least). So, you can jam two straws together, or look for extra long straws. If you jam them together, check them every time they are still tight. If they come apart during a race, it's so much harder to drink.

For the top, take a plastic sandwich bag, cut a square out of it to cover the top. Poke two holes in it (one for the straw, one to let air in). Take an elastic band and wrap the plastic around the top of the bottle. Stick your straw in.

As an added trick, take another elastic and put it overtop of the zip tie. Now you can secure your HRM monitor by slipping the watch strap underneath the elastic.

If you want to refill during a race without fumbling you can try saran wrap w/a thick rubber band. you can stab a bottle though the plastic to refill.

But, I replaced mine with a shower poofie thingy cut in half and it works fine. A lid kind of defeats the purpose.
