Subject: Swim intervals - don't like 'em, can't do 'em!
Swimming is my least favorite discipline, but I can swim 2000 meters at a 2:05 - 2:10 pace. I have started doing intervals, and according to my little triathlon book, based on my endurance pace, I should be swimming 100 m VO2 max intervals at 1:45 pace on the 2 min, and 50 m speed intervals at :50 pace on the 1:10. I can complete the first 100 m interval without problems, but by the end of the second interval, I'm dying. My form deteriorates, I'm exhausted, and by the end of the second 100 m, I have no time to rest at all before the third interval, so I just hang on the wall until I'm recovered. The 50 m speed intervals don't seem to give me the same problems, but I can only complete 4 intervals before falling behind.

Where am I failing, or am I just a pool wuss?

You are doing fine just keep doing....

I am not a swim coach. But today I was doing 100’s on 1:50 and was gassed by the 4th. My times were 1:22, 1:17, 1:17, 1:20, 1:22, 1:25, 1:30, 1:30, 1:32, and 1:28. My master’s coach says these will translate into faster distance times so long as I continue with my distance (2000+) drills focusing on form. My last good form 2000m swim was at 33:15 at a steady pace concentrating on form more then speed. In my opinion you need to thrash out the short stuff at times BUT form is all mighty in the water because it gives you the economy for speed when you swim distance.

At your pace your biggest limiter (mine too, I suck at swimming) is technique. Intervals are great for building up speed but that's not what you need. You need to slow down, get in the pool as many times as possible and work on technique. That means lots of drills, and lots of swimming with focused attention on your stroke.

Swimming intervals will help you out big time. 2 years ago, I couldn't do 5 100's on the 2:00, now I can do 40 (last Friday) on the 1:30, avg of 1:21 for all of them. I am now a pretty decent swimmer... Masters is where it's at man! It helps all your distances out, just today we did 400's and I was holding them on the 1:25 for all of them.
