Alrighty. Remember me from the "umm...what am I doing?" thread? For those of you who haven't seen it, it's about how I'm kinda freaking out about my first tri (400m swim/20K bike/5K run) coming up on Sunday.

Today was the first day in about 7 or 8 years that I swam in a pool. And let me tell you...I was able to do 400m without stopping...TWICE! I forgot to time myself the first time haha, so I did it again after resting for about 3 minutes. And I got a time of somewhere around 14:50. That's probably a really bad time lol but at least I know I CAN DO IT!!

Cool

Well, at least you have the confidence to know you can do the distance!  Congrats!

Now ... imagine what you'll be able to do with more training and getting your old form back.

Congrats! You'll be fine - and with more training, you'll get your fitness back too. That stuff is partly muscle memory, esp if you did it for a long time at a competitive level, ya know?

Thanks everyone...I can't wait to do it!

David- I would say that I'll look forward to seeing you there, but there's a good chance I'll be eating your dust from several miles away lol

The Bear- I haven't really found a bike...I'm trying to rent one out at RPAC (the gym) so I can use it to race. Comes with a helmet and all!

Still more questions: Where do I put my stuff? (like change of clothes, water bottle, etc) and how do I put my number on? I know I know...stupid questions. But I'm pretty detail oriented lol

You will put your stuff in the transition area. There are a ton of threads about it on here, so give a search a try and see what you need (basics are a towel to spread you stuff on, small towel to dry off a bit, running shoes since I assume you aren't going clipless you won't need bike shoes, sunglasses, water bottles, powergel or bar, and obviously whatever clothes you want). Also, bring a hat or visor for the run...the sun can wreck you if you aren't careful.

Listen, you can totally do this. Pace yourself, save a little more than you think you need on the first two stages. The run is always tough when you are pooped, so save a bit extra in the tank for it.

It would be great to have more time, but have this experience, and it will motivate you for your training in the next one.

There will be a transition area outside the pool. Bring a towel to lay your stuff on. The race volunteers will tell where to put your bike. Lay your towel next to your bike and put your socks, running shoes, shirt and your shorts (if your going to wear some) on the towel. If you don't have a race belt just pin your race number onto your shirt with safety pins. Also make sure you have your race number on your bike and helmet (you did get one, right?). Your water bottle goes in the bottle cage on the bike. All of this should be done before you go to the pool area for your swim.

You swim, enter the transition area, put on your HELMET, socks, shirt etc and off you go on your bike. After your ride you enter transition again, drop off your bike and helmet and your off on your run.

If you don't have a race belt just pin your race number onto your shirt with safety pins.

This is going to be hugely time consuming and clumsy to try to pin your number on in transition. Do yourself a big favor and invest $7 in a race belt.

Couldn't you pin it to the shirt before the race then just put the shirt on after the swim?

I don't really care about time to be honest. Finishing in itself will be a victory for me. I can worry about actually racing later.

I am sure you have been to the HFP site... but they have an updated .pdf file that has the course and has the layout of the swim.

My first couple of tris I pinned my number to my jersey/shirt and was fine. It was a little weird to put on but like you said... You are doing this just for fun and for accomplishment.

I will be there and hope to meet up with some of the other BTers. I will be number 35.

Good luck!

Bear,

I'm not trying to pick a fight but if you read my OP it says in the last sentence of the first paragraph that all of this should be done before you go to the pool area for your swim. Then after the swim the helmet...shirt etc goes on. I suppose I was not clear that the shirt you put on in transition is the one with the number pinned to it. Anyway, have a great race.

BTW Bear I really like your anaimated walking bear.

David
