Subject: Very weird issue help!

Two weeks ago I strained my knee, felt like it was sort of twisted but could have easily been an overuse injury. Took it easy the past two weeks, went for two runs a short 3mile run on the road and a trail run. Felt great both times.

Yesterday I had a race andthe same issue came up but far worse and felt like a needle was being stuck into the side of my right knee about 1/2inch below my knee cap and the outside portion.

I DNF'ed went to the hospital they told me to wait a few weeks then call a Dr. My knee has been wrapped since yesterday until just a short time ago.

I now looked down, my right ankle, and foot are swollen. Noticeably. My knee still hurts just not as bad.

Any ideas?

Go to a sports oriented ortho asap. interent guesses won't help you. doctor is the best bet to at least diagnose. come back here for treatment advice/experiences but it could be a dozen things.

After calling a ton of places one was able to get me in this this afternoon and they are sports focused, opposed to the regular orthopedics that could not get me in for 1-3 weeks.

So I met with the orthopedic Dr. he checked it out for a bit and said it was ITBS. Determined that my right hip is tighter than left (I already knew this for years), and that I move my hips too much when running because I have a catwalk like run (my feet run close to one another and should stay out further. He recommended I go see a sports therapist/Dr, and I made an appointment with them. I had no hip issues, which is why I did not think it was ITB related.

It feel 100x better today.

He did say that if I had a race very soon that he would give me a cortisone injection so that I could run it.

Just a suggestion: R.I.C.E. for now and maybe cut back on the running and go for aqua jogging instead and of course lots of stretching.

You could have a go at self diagnosis, although this is just a temporary measure until you see the ortho/physio therapist.

Sorry just saw your last post.

I had a tight ITB about 5 years ago and couldn't walk it was that painfull.  It turned out that my quads weren't strong enough to take my body weight whilst running.  So after 4-5 weeks of constant (3-4x a week) physio in the gym, lots of stretching and massages I was back running marathons.

Once again it just goes to show that core strength is as important as putting in the miles in the pool, on the bike and out running.
