Can I ask what you were doing running for 6 hours and 32.5 miles?  That was your problem.

X2. I'm not sure most ultramarathoners train like that.

Also not even sure i want to get into the "intervals as punishment" statement. This is training, not auto-sado-masochism.

I think you sound physically and mentally spent from overtraining. you need to step back and figure out a methodical plan for your next event and don't push it because you may want to do ultras later. It sounds like you have the ability to do them so you don't need to "test" yourself right now. Just follow your training plan and stick to it..nothing more. Otherwise you'll end up discouraged (like you are) and/or injured.

I'm confused.

You are training for a marathon...but during training just thought you would see how you would do in an ultra endurance event?

So, you don't care about your time on the marathon I take it.

I can't really see how running 32.5 miles a month out (?) before a marathon really helped you with your marathon training... thus... the "you don't care" statement.

I guess I would ask if you HR zone training and what different zones you were training in for your other training sessions following the long run.

I wanted to see how I would do in an ultra endurance event and that came up perfect timing.  My plan is to do ultras in the future and I figured it would be good testing to see how the body handles it.

it doesn't work that way... if you don't have the fitness and haven't allow your body to adapt to certain stress your training will suffer at best or end up injured/unmotivated at worst... You did more than what your body can handle plain and simple; those who can do ultras or complete (not race) marathons frequently have trained years to adapt their bodies...

Sounds like you need a day or two off. Even ultra endurance individuals need time off to fully recover. I remember an article of an individual that finished an IM a month ago and is still not in the mood to resume training. Days off are good for you. Definitely after a 32.5 mile run.

Now you know that your body doesn't handle it too well, at least when it's not properly prepared for it and without considering the recovery costs.

Well, don't beat yourself up about Saturday's run, it takes time to recover from the 6 hour effort you put in last week.  You just didn't have enough rest in between.  I know the frustration of a long run where nothing feels right.  Days like that happen, and you are better off shortening the run, or making it into an easy run, than putting in a half-hearted effort.  Cut yourself some slack, you have been putting in some really consistent training lately!

I think the more foolish thing was to go out and try to do 20 miles yesterday.

You shouldn't be doing more than 13-15 TOPS, and this weekend should've been at MOST 10.

At this point, the hay is in the barn for the marathon.  You don't need real long runs anymore.  So don't do real long runs.  Right now, maintain fitness, run at an easy pace, and give your body a chance to recover.

Just take a few days off then work it up and put in two good weeks with shorter (<10Mile) tempo work. Then do 1 last 20miler and taper it out to the race...

you need to recover even if you body feels fine your mind is blowing up. Dorian Yates (a former pro bodybuilder) said if he went to the gym and didnt feel "it" he would walk right out the door so he didnt waste the workout by not being 100% focused.

Hi, it is the "I should be doing something else ( some real work ) instead of my training" thought for me. I am trying to make myself keep going 7 weeks out from an IM. I am just tired, mentally more than anything and so I make mistakes in judging what I can do. Just loosing the patience with the training program. It feels I should be lot further in my endurance, instead i get so tired (physically)  in the middle mile, I just feel like I waisted my and my family's time yet again. And the IM does not make me any money so they really have no profit from it , they are just getting the short end.

Good luck,at least better luck than me at figuring it out.

 Jitka

Sounds like you need a day or two off.

Or six.

Seriously, you overdid it. Time to relax, get a massage, stretch and maybe swim, but your legs need a significant break right now.
