Subject: Tri size 58'? I am 6'4'
I just recently went to a local LBS that prides itself on its fitting skills. I rode a 56' felt S22 (the only size they had) around their huge parking lot. That was the only time that I have really been able to put the hammer down, and ride a tri bike really fast. It was awesome!!! I currently ride a MTB, and it was like going from a Semi to a Ferrari.

Anyway, The owner of the shop told me that I looked very comfortable on the 56' and recommended that I look into a 58'. I didnt beleive him, I am 6'4. I always assumed that I was way too tall for any size other that 60 or 61'.
So, he whent on for about 10 mins saying that I am flexible enough for the more aggresive position.

Is this guy crazy, or should I really look into a 58'?
Is there anyone else out here who is 6'4' and rides a 58" bike?

Thanks for the help, Mike

I know of one person who's about that tall and rides a 58.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 6'1" and ride a 54 cm tri bike...

Well I'm 6'2" and they wanted to fit me on a 56 Cervelo until they found out how flexible I wasn't. So they put me on a 58 with the seat in the forward position and a shorter stem. So if you are 2" taller and more flexible I don't see why you couldn't fit on a 58 with and aggressive fit.

Size will also vary between manufaturers...what is your inseam? I am 6'3 but have a 34" inseam and I ride a 56cm bike. I also like to be very aggressive in my position so I prefer a smaller frame. Ultimately you have to be comfortable on what you are riding.

Do an on line fit calculator at www.coloradocyclist.com or www.wrenchscience.com Those will give you measurements for what each tube on the bike should be. The biggest one isn't where frame size is maesured. Manufacturers report seat tube to virtual top tube; that's your 58 or 56. Yet Top Tube length is least adjustable and determines your fit.

As the other poster mentioned, each manufacturer measures this differently. A 58 isn't always a 58.

FWIW: I'm 6'4" and have 4 58cm bikes and 1 59cm. All of these have a 580 top tube. I never was comfortable on a 60.

I have a 33.5in inseam. I checked out a few fit calculators, and the responses are varied. I will try the ones you suggested. Thanks for the reassurance though, I geuss I just wanted to know that other athletes my size ride bike smaller that 60. And, I have checked with the shops that carry the bikes I am looking into. They have promised me that I will be properly fitted to what ever bike I choose. Even if that means ordering two bikes.
I live in the Central Florida.

I am 6'7" and when I was shopping (I use that term loosely because I really didn't plan on buying) my LBS said anywhere from 58 to 61 depending on my flexibility so 58 would definately work for you depending on your flexibility.  I ended up with a 61cm and am comfortable on it.  BTW, I have a 64 cm roadie that is also comfortable.

I am 6'1" and I have ridden a 61, 60, and 58 that all fit pretty well. It really depends on the manufacturer and how you like to ride. Do you like a seat angle of 80 or more relaxed at 76 or 74? I would think that if you are 6'4" you need to also look at the headtube length as some of the 58's might have a short head tube for your size. To me the head tube length is very important because I am not that flexible so the front end can not be too low or it really affects my back. A lot of tri bikes now have the dual seat post so depending on how you like your seat angle will determine what size bike. If you ride at 80 you might want the 61 or 60 because it will shorten the top tube if you like a more relaxed ride and want a seat angle of 76-74 a 58 might work to lengthen the top tube.

I'm 6'2" (legitimate with shoes off) and ride a 58".

I could use a longer seat post as my prefered heigth requires me to raise it 1/2" above the recommended maximum.  The 58" was actually longer than it needed to be on the top tube measurement.   My bike shop installed a shorter stem for me than came with the bike.

If you're torso is not too long (this would require a long stem and put too much weight forward) then you should be able to fit a 58" with a longer seat post.

My personal guess, if you inseam is 37" inches or so, you could fit a 58" (quite possibly though a larger frame could be more optimum).

I am looking at Cervelo p2sl, or P2C. Which I know has a shorter top tube.
I have discovered that the Felt s22, and the Jamis Trilogy have a longer top tube.
The Felt and Jamis are 78 deg. and the cervelo can be adjusted from 76-78.
I have only ridden MTB's so far so I dont have a seat angle preference.
I think the most important thing is finding a good bike fitter.

I have not looked at the Jamis Geometry but for the Felt look at the 07 Felt S32 as it had the dual seat post so it had 2 different Geometry specs like the Cervelo. I just think at 6'4" a 58 is going to be pretty small unless you have a very short torso or you ride with the seat all the way back. It would be very beneficial to go to a store that has a few so you can test ride the different sizes but if you are like me there are no tri stores within a 200 mile radius.

I'm 6'4" with a short torso compared to my very long logs (36" inseams for pants).  I was just fitted up on a 58cm (at 78 degrees) Cervelo P2C and if fits perfectly.  The bike shop used one of the Argon 18 fit bikes and tried Cervelo and Felt geometries at 60 cm and 58 cm at both extremes of seat tube angle.  I couln't be happier with the results (OK, I'd be happier if I had more time to ride it )

Note that I ride a 62 cm Trek road bike - it is a little on the big side and I think I would be better on a 60 - not only do different bikes fit differently but I think many people find that their tri bike is nominally smaller than their road bike.

I'm 6'2" and I ride a Jamis Trilogy 58. I was fitted by someone who didn't sell me the bike and the only thing i needed was a shorter stem. The fitter could have sold me a lot more product, but he said everything looked pretty good.

Hope that helps.
