Subject: Las Vegas Trip

Just wanted to give a shout out.

I'm travelling to Las Vegas and staying at the Hard Rock (but they don't have a pool).  I noticed that it's near UNLV.

Anyone from Vegas have an idea on how I can get my swims in while I'm there?

I'll be there from this Sunday through Wednesday.

Thx in advance for any suggestions.

I stayed at the Hard Rock just last weekend - PM me and I can give you any details that you'd like.  I also have an interesting training story from my visit - it is in my training log.

Hard Rock most definitely has a pool. May not be a good lap pool, but they definitely have a pool. With lots of scenery.

Seriously, if you can't find any other alternatives you could still get some swimming in there. Any you will have it all to yourself any time before 10 am.

Yep, they got a pool, and one of the most hedonistic pool parties in town.  NOT so good for laps.....

But laps CAN be done - I speak from experience.*

*NOTE - Only attempt this if you have a VERY understanding and supportive spouse.

If I'm going to Vegas, the training gets put on hold for the week.

There are other cardiovascular exercises that are far more interesting than swim/bike/run.

Dude, a search engine would do it for you:

The natatorium is located adjacent to the men’s and women’s locker rooms within the Paul D. McDermott Physical Education Complex on the UNLV campus. The pool is used for P.E. classes as well as open public swimming.

There are a few pools in vegas, I'm not sure the quality of the UNLV pool. A friend of mine is a professor there and he has chosen to wait until their new pool is finished before starting to swim.

Desert Breeze Aquatic Center has a 50m pool, except it is only 50m on monday and wednesday mornings. Plus lanes are limited because the masters team has 4 of the 8 lanes in use from 5:30-7:00. I have been told that you can swim with the masters team for the standard price of $3.

Henderson Multigenerational Center has an outdoor 50m pool that is only 50m on tuesday and thursday mornings from 5:30 - 9. It costs around $2.

Whitney Ranch Aquatic Center has a 25y pool and costs the same as the MultiGen.

I swam laps in the pool at the Venetian, and I wasn't alone.  I recommend the hotel pool in the morning, it shouldn't be a problem.  I had never swam laps in an outdoor pool like that, so this was a real treat for me!   Vegas is excellent for training (just don't forget your nipple guards if you go running like that other guy... geesh)

I also rented a nice road bike from a bike store and rode the Red Rock Canyon loop.  It was so beautiful.  I look forward to returning to Vegas for the outdoor activities.  They can keep the gambling/expensive shopping/bad restaurants.

Thanks a ton for all the info.  It was a HUGE help!!!

Did my track workout next door at UNLV...awesome track and met some military folk that were conditioning some soldiers.

Did my swim at the Mirage pool outside.  They had 3 25yrd lines in the southeast portion of the big, huge, pool.  People were staring at me as I swam for over an hour at 10:00am (I didn't get up early...you know it's vegas) that was funny.  people sorta got the idea to give me space...but new folks to the pool meandered across the swim lane...no big deal...just continued to practice sighting.

Yes, vegas is great training ground!

Thanks again everyone.

Oh, by the way, I couldn't get into the UNLV pool...it's off-limits to the public...contrary to what the website says.
