In sprints I dont bring any tire flat stuff... figure if i flat I am done. In my 1/2 I brought stuff to change a flat.... but with my new saddle the bag hangs down and havent messed with it to fix it... wondering if most pack stuff for a oly... I cant change a tire that quickly... i am sure it would kill my time... but then again do I want to dnf because of it.. not sure

I have a wedge bag with stuff in for two tire changes. Just never bother taking it off, and yes I leave it on for sprints/oly's whatever.

It isn't going to make a difference in my AG finish that is significant, and I HATE the thought of a DNF. I don't train as long and as hard as I do to not finish a race. Do one and have a crappy time because of a tire change, I can take that.

That being said, it's my personal philosphy, and I can understand for the pro's and top AG'ers that a flat will take them out of contention and they just bag the race so they don't blow up training.

IMO.

I'm the same, I would even have stuff for an sprint. A DNF due to a flat tire seems rediculous to me. A DNF for other reasons that are unavoidable are a different story but if someone asks "why did you DNF" and you said "cuz I flatted" you are going to sound like an idiot! That is something you can do something about. HECK I would run my bike in on a sprint it I had to to avoid DNF.

That being said some bags are better than others. I cannot stand bags that swing around all low near the rear tire. I have one that is low profile and sits REAL snug up behind the back seat.

Mine is by Krieg - plus they come in over 50 different fun styles! Mine is Zebra!

It's only big enough for a spare tube, CO2 stuff and tire levers. On longer races/ rides I actually stick a second tube in a Bento.

The saying goes: DFL>DNF>DNS

That being said; I don't know anyone who doesn't bring what they need to fix a flat, regardless of how quickly they change it or what distance the race is.

Maybe sit down and practice fixing flats quicker?  Tape the tube to your seat post ?(which I do).  This sport is my hobby. I do it for fun, fitness and personal pride.  Personally, I take more pride in seeing someone finish a race under difficult circumstances than PR'ing a race under perfect circumstances.  I've been injured for the past 2 months. My times are going to S_CK this weekend. Still going to do it though and take my time.

You'll see me DNF if I snap a femur or am pulled from the course. Anything short of that and I'll be wildly disappointed.

I think you should bring a tube

The guy in my avatar is what I'm working towards. I figure if I stay injured, I will look like him in another 2 months.

I'd even bring a spare (or two) for a sprint.

Like others have said, DNFing due to a flat tire when I chose not to carry a spare would really bother me (even in a sprint).  I understand that other people have other goals and reasons for racing so I'm not judging the decisions that other people make in this regard.  Just saying that races are a treat for me and I'd really like to try to finish them if possible, even if my time is really slow.

At IMAZ I carried two spare tubulars plus a can of Pit Stop.  I also had another spare in my special needs bag.  Also carried a multi-tool, tire levers, razor blade and a spare quick-link for my chain.  My under-saddle bag is ridiculous and heavy, but that's a trade-off I'm willing to live with.  I still DNF'd the race, but at least I made it to the run where the mechanical breakdowns were all my own.

Paulettejo - 2008-05-16 3:38 PM I'm pretty sure Chris doesn't wear underwear!

Oh he does - - remember - - we saw his thong at Ragnar.  I've been seeing a shrink to try and rid my mind of that image.

I think this was a thread about flat tires,

not Chris's unmentionables.
