Subject: To Clyde or Not to Clyde
Did the last two races in the Clydes division and feel real good about finishing towards the top (5th in a HIM and 1st in local sprint). The dilemma is I really have a hard time dropping below 200 and maintaining that weight. I can stay at my current weight without much problem.

I know drop an additional 10-15 would enhance by run and bike performance, but then I just MOP age grouper (40-44).

My ego and the feeling coming from finishing up towards the front is fighting my desire to drop these last few pounds.

Advice? Anyone been in this position before?

To be blunt, I'd rather compete at the highest level of which I am capable, primarily against myself, than to do well within a contrived sub-segment at a lower level of performance.

YMMV.

You aren't really closer to the front are you? I know what you meant but if my kids come to a race and see my big a$$ roll in 30-40th overall they still aren't real impressed when I tell them I won the Clyde Division. If I tell them I improved by 5 minutes over last year because I lost 15 pounds and trained real hard they still wouldn't be impressed, but I and others in the sport would be. In my opinion Faster = better in this sport no matter the groups, awards etc.

I think I am in a similar situation.

I'm a solid 220 and do pretty well in the Clydesdale division (FOP'er the last couple races).  I don't mind competing in that division as long as I qualify for it.

However, I would NOT avoid losing weight to stay in that division.  If I ever dropped below 200 (doubtfull for my height), I would be just as happy competing in my AG.  To me, being healthy, looking good, and getting faster is the most important thing to me.  Not podium spots.  I will compete in any division I qualify for at the time and not make adjustments to my weight to do so.

All good points. I know the right answer is get faster and perform better relative to my established fitness level regardless of weight. I fundamentally know that getting lighter will benefit my performance, but it sure did feel good to win something after all the hard training.

Next race is four weeks away and I should be a solid age grouper and a solid MOP. I will savor the extra minutes I peel off my time.

thanks

John
