Subject: Sprint Tri Nutrition
I am almost (ALMOST!) ready for my first sprint distance tri in two weeks. Usually on all my training rides and runs, etc, I head out in the morning and have a small bowl of oatmeal first. I have tried the sport beans twice and saw some results the first time, not the second. I have never tried gu and, they really don't sound appealing to me. Any recommendations for the day of the race? Should I be getting in some Gatorade or something in the next two weeks? Just water? A bar of some sort on the bike?

Can you tell I am getting nervous already.......

Thanks!

I really don't take anything on a sprint, you have reserves to last you a couple of hours and most people will be finished a sprint by then. Good meal pre-race, something that you're used to like your oatmeal, and maybe a gatorade on the way to the race.

If you want to eventually increase your race distances, though, you may want to start trying gels (Gu and other brands). They're really not as unappealing as they sound and some are pretty tasty(Carboom Apple Cinammon, yum!).

There should br no need for additional nutrition on a typical spring. Your body's energy reserves should have enough to see you through. For races longer than 2 hours or so, nutrition comes into play....not so much for shorter stuff.

Don't try something new on race day.

Yep - eat your oatmeal 2-3 hrs b4 the start of the race.  Might want to take a Gu 15 mins b4 the start, drink at least water on the bike and you should be fine for a Sprint.  Oh, if you do the Gu 15 mins b4 the race than try that in training first.  As was said, race day is not time to experiment!

Eat a breakfest, nothing huge, just something to keep you comfortable upto and through the race.

Then I just bring a bottle of gatorade on the bike.

A lot of good advice so far.  The only thing I'd as, is to hydrate before hand, and to hit the portajohn before lining up.  Other than that, have a great first race.

Something that often gets overlooked until it's too late, no matter what the distance:

Watch what you eat the night before the race.  Burping up curdled marinara sauce for an hour is no fun.  Just sayin'...

I normally hit up some pasta the night before. On race day morning for sprints, I take in water and about 45 minutes before the start I hit a GU. Other than that, nothing else.

I haven't raced yet, but in every other sport, it was always plain pasta with butter the night before. Oatmeal/coffee the morning before the event. Everything mild, slow acting simple carbs, and stuff I wasn't going to be burping up during the game.

Then, right before the game, super espresso shots until I was Cornholio.

x2 on the hydration. nothing like a good cramp in your run to remind you that you didn't hydrate enough!

Yep!

I normally eat the same thing the night before a race and aftewards, because I am like that. However, I had a race this weekend and did not do my normal pre-race day meal, and won my AG. Perhaps I need to change my habits.
