Subject: Hickory Flat Canton Ride. Saturday, May 24th @ 7am

Date: Saturday May 24th
Time: 7am (yikes!)
Location: Meet at the Publix at Hickory Flat (GA Hwy 140 and E. Cherokee Dr.)
6175 Hickory Flat Hwy, Canton, GA 30115-7210
Sponsor: Outspokin Bikes

I'm going to give this one a try to get some more hills in with a group format. It's sponsored by Outspokin' Bikes and is a beginner ride. It then meets up with the regular group at 8am for the option of another 16-31 miles I believe. I'm probably going to extend the ride with the 8am group as well.

Description:
It is a 16 mile, one hour loop, designed with beginner riders in mind. Not too hilly, not too flat... just a comfortable loop to get the beginning road rider a little more group riding experienced before adding more distance and more hills into the mix. We meet the 8am group before their ride, so those wanting to do both loops are welcome. The Beginner Ride is just that. All fast riders can ride on their own... this is for the new guys and gals.

Optional 8am ride for additional miles: The normal route is 31 miles, with shorter options available.

Beth, be careful on this ride. It has some dangerous roads and sometimes the "beginner friendly" rides out of there aren't so much. Not trying to discourage you or anything, just be prepared to ride on some busy roads in spots.

Brett, would you recommend a Roswell ride instead? I'm pretty used to riding in traffic, it typically doesn't freak me out but not if it's VERY dangerous. I do get a little skeeved riding down West Paces Ferry sometimes because there is no shoulder...

Actually, let me clarify. WPF doesn't freak me out b/c of the curves the cars really don't get going too fast. Is it dangerous a la East West Connector/S Cobb Dr. dangerous? That I don't like. At all.

IMO Roswell is safer, they at least have bike lanes on most of the roads. There are a couple of roads on the Hickory Flats ride that have no shoulder, are heavily traveled and are curvey. It might be Ok with a group though. Go and check it out and see what it is like. If  you don't like it then do Roswell instead.

You might want to check in with them to make sure that none of the ride was impacted by the tornado that went through last night.  I have some family up in the general area and they say that portions were badly hit (mostly E Cherokee near Woodstock).  It may be that there are some power line trucks stopped on the side of the road that could impact the ride this weekend.  Maybe not, but something to watch out for.

Good point. The ride leader emailed me back, verified its no drop, he leads and will ride w/the slowest person. Seemed cool so I'll give it a try.

Go for it.  It is a great weekend to ride and sounds pretty supportive.
