Subject: What bike shop gets your patronage?

I live in Champlin and would like to establish a bike shop as "mine", but haven't chosen one.  Maybe others can list their favorite shops and why they like them.  I've heard good things about Gear West Bike, but they are about 20 miles from my place.  My road bike is from Penn Cycle, but they aren't the closest to me, either.  My tri bike was purchased online.

In all honesty, for certain things I will probably shop online (tires and tubes and things like that), but I want a competent place to perform tuning and buy some items that are best seen in person before buying.

for replacing my shifter and rear derailleur (two different trips) I went to Freewheel on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis. I was given a very good rate for labor costs and the parts were competitive too.

I wish GearWest was only 20 miles from me.  I drive about 45 miles to get there and it is the only place I will take my bike for anything more than just the basics.  I'm sure others are just as good but I have never had a problem with those folks.

I like the County Cycles crew. Most of them don't own cars, and ride all year. They have decent prices, and the turn around for me has been good. Plus, I am a member of the Tri team, and get a discount on shopping there. As far as Penn goes, a New one opened in Blaine right behind the Gander Mountain on Central. I don't know how their service is, but if you were looking for a closer Penn, that might be an option.

Gear West is about 5 miles from me, and they get all my business (Tri, Road and Mtn. Bike)... TK is awesome... even packed up my wife's bike for IronGirl Las Vegas this spring.  (for some reason, she didn't trust me???      Great service always done as scheduled if not earlier...  Many times for small adjustments (wheels etc.) a quick check while I wait and either fixed or a good estimate of what needs to be done...

These 2 places are probably too far for you to drive to, but I've had good experiences at both:

Penn Cycle Minnetonka - installed bottom bracket and cranks on my tri bike in 15 min over a lunch hour (no waiting) and charged me 15 bucks.  Very down to earth and will talk no frills if that's your preference.

Valley Bike & Ski - although somewhat overpriced, again, if you talk to the owner, very knowledgeable and down to earth.  I've gone in on 2 occasions, had questions on my bike build, he answered the questions and even gave me extra parts he had in the store FOR FREE to solve the problem.  Each of the parts, I estimate were about $9 at any other bike shop.  He just bought my business with $18 in parts and some awesome customer service.

I left my tri bike there this weekend to get the cabling finalized and DuraAce chain installed...

Nashbar.com has my online business.  Through them and eBay, I'll have this tri bike built for under $750 (Leader frame, Ultegra cranks and derailleurs)...

I left my new tri bike with Erik's of Maple Grove on Friday.  So far I'm disappointed.  I had hoped to get some time in on this bike this long weekend.  Doesn't look like it's going to happen.  The shifters, cassette, and derailleurs are all campy.  They can't seem to get the bar-end shifters adjusted properly and want to put in a call to their campy representative.  Unfortunately, I only have the manual for the rear derailleur and can't help them out.

Frustrating.  I should have taken it to Gear West Bike and saved myself a headache.

I've seem too many former students with very little bike experiance working at Erik's.  I would never trust them to wrench on my bike for anything other than the most basic of things.

I recently bought a new road bike from Excelcycle in Excelsior. (where else!) Great guys, fabulous service and very little of the "attitude" one might expect from a high end shop. It's too bad they are so far out in the hinterlands, because this is a great bike shop!

Man, we went by there on our ride today, and I drooled all over my bike just looking in the window as we passed.

As a followup to my post regarding Erik's.  I did get my bike back today.  Andy there made things right and considering the fact that many other shops have longer lead times, I guess I shouldn't complain.

Gear West is the ONLY place that will get any of my business.  I have been to a few different shops and they are all OK, but the level of attention to detail, customer service, and selection are the best at Gear West bar NONE!

Here is my latest example of top notch customer service:

At the Apple Duathlon (5/24) I flatted on a virtually new (~17 miles) Conti Comp Tubular tire which runs $100/tire.  I went to GW to have them put on my spare so that I could limp it through the rest of the season, and they said that since I had such a small amount of miles on the tire they were going to warranty it out and GIVE me a new tire!!

In my mind, that is what customer service is all about! and why I will not go any where else.

And for the record, GW is 52 miles from me....the drive is worth every mile regardless of gas cost.

Have been pleasantly surprised with Eric's (Burnsville).  Went to them for 'last resort' work (cutting the carbon steerer, 2 spacers and an expansion cap, back wheel tune-up) last Saturday (busy as all get-out).  Brought it in at 1:30 pm.  PLEADED with them to have it back same day.  They promised it at 4:30.  They called at 3:50pm and said it was ready.  Checked everything over and no problems.

They have their good moments...

x2 for Excelcycle. Great shop. Even though they sell beautiful bikes, they take great care in fixing any cycle no matter the level. These guys know what they are doing.

I also like Gear West but it is not worth the driving given the fact Excelcycle is closer for me.

I really like bike shops where the wrench stations are right out in the middle of the shop, not hidden behind a wall or in the basement! You can learn a ton from these pros, just in passing, or in having the mechanics overhear your conversations with sales staff. Excelcycle, Hollywood in Bloomington and my local shop in Mendota Heights are set up this way. No hiding the working men and women behind cycle marketing and glitz!

NW corner of 98th and lyndale, in the little mall where REI used to be! Small shop, but nicely done and very friendly. Check out the website, the store hours are somewhat limited. I called a couple of weeks ago and they had a saddle I was looking for. The owner is an ace mechanic/rider, he was a wrench for one of the pro teams at the tour of California this spring! I have no idea how fast their turn around time on repairs would be, however when I was there a couple guys were waiting for work done on the fly!

Yeah, Excelcycle is setup so you can basically sit at a long counter and watch the guys work on your (or another) bike. They encourage it. It is like bellying up to the bar. I've learned alot from sitting there, and have made alot of repair decisions on the fly because the repair guy can talk me through what he's seeing as I'm sitting there 3 feet away.

I like that too.
