So it seems there is to be a new half-iron and sprint tri on 9/28 at Spruce Run.  Anyone know the group, the RD or any details??  Web link says course maps to be posted 5/23 but they're not up as far as I can see.

 http://www.njmultisport.com/SpruceRun.htm

I'm contemplating the half, because it's my birthday

ETA:  LOL!!  There are a whopping 8 people registered for the race right now, only one of them being female.  Ok, no more women sign ups, all right?  Promise?  That way, if I'm the only other female in the race, I'm *guaranteed* hardware on my birthday!  Yay 2nd place!!

"Local" Fall Half Iron Mans are relatively rare so this one is looking good. There are some posts on other forums however I am not familiar with the details. The area is very scenic and close to my home so I plan to sign up. It should be fun.

Hmm, still no course maps. Looks to be a really nice course, though, based off of their descriptions. The timing is perfect for my first planned HIM, as well, so I am seriously thinking of doing this one.

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't come across this one. I'm more interested in the sprint, especially if I'm in tri season withdrawal in September. I'll probably play it by ear.

I've got my eye on this race as well.. The course sounds nice, based on the description. I used to live in that area years ago. Would still love to hear if anyone has any experience with the race organizers. I wonder if there lower limit for how many people they need registered to run the event? As of this morning, there are only 10 registered for the half.

I'm also thinking to do it as my second HIM. It's the organizers' first race... but they're backed b Lin-Mark which is a reliable company.

They posted all the maps, should be a nice course, not very far from me so at least I can practice it before.

I just went to the website - it looks like a really fun course. I was tempted to register, but as this is my first tri season and my "A" race this year is the Nation's Triathlon (OLY) on Sept. 14, I am going to restrain myself and set this as my tentative goal for 2009. It looks like a great first HIM. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi — i just stumbled on this race and am curious to know what any of you folks know about NJ multisport or about this particular race. I am from the area, but live in CT for many years now. This does seem like a great venue for a half IM, but since this will be the first it makes me a little nervous. What kind of track record do these folks have??

Who's doing it? Anybody??

A co-worker of mine did the half bike course preview the other weekend, and said it was a nice course, well-marked, and they even had water out at the midway point (I thought that was a nice touch, considering it was just a preview!)

Evidently there is a nasty spot where you come down a hill, around a corner, and then over a steel-deck bridge, it was a little drizzly out and the RDs were there, warning people in advance to slow down and be careful.  One of the guys in my co-workers group wiped out anyways, and the RDs felt bad so they offered him a free entry for the race   And they are considering getting mats for the bridge for race day.

So far, I'd say they're sounding prepared.

It's the first race I think for these organizers. They have racing experience... And since Lin-Mark associated with them I'd assume they can do a good job, LM doesn't get into messy low-key races. I rode the course alone and I liked it.

Thanks for the info. I'm considering it pending I feel recovered enough from my recent IM. I know the  area and think it would be fun to do a race there!

Only 251 entrants so far, with 87 of those being in my race - Sprint.  Hopefully this race will continue and not get cancelled due to lack of entrants, unless the organizers were counting on a low turn-out.  Even if the numbers double, it'll be weird going from the large NJ State Tri to this one.

Stumfossil, it's indeed a very nice bike course.

Kagoscuba, that's a decent number so far, a lot more should register by race day... NJ State is one of the biggest around, there are many tris with just a few hundred competitors.

Thanks for the info Chris! I read your ride report and it sounds good. I have done Mooseman in NH twice and IMLP so can't imagine the hills are any worse than in either of those venues…

I am still keeping it on my "maybe" list pending I feel like I can have a good race by the end of September

Stumfossil, if you did IMLP, then you can consider JerseyMan totally flat. Only a few small bumps.

Update for tomorrow:

Just a quick note to remind everyone that we will be having our second (free) pre race rides of the Jerseyman ½ Iron and sprint bike courses this Saturday August 23rd.  We will have different pace groups for both courses with an aid station at mile marker 27 on the 1/2 Iron course. The aid station will have gatorade, water, pretzels, GU and bananas. There will also be refreshments in the finish parking lot. We will be providing cue sheets and marking the course prior to the rides to ensure no one gets lost. We will provide the cue sheets and go over the course just prior to departure. We will but up some race day signage so the route will be clearly marked so you can feel free to ride at your own pace (if you wish) without the worry of getting lost. We are planning on leaving at 8 a.m. SHARP for both courses. Spruce Run Recreation Area charges admission to the park at this time of the year so we have decided to start the ride slightly outside of the park. There is a gravel parking lot that is on Van Syckles Road that is ~ 1.4 miles from the park entrance. If you are coming via Route 31 it will be 2.9 miles up Van Syckles Road on your left (you will pass the park entrance) and if you are coming from exit 12 on Route 78 it will be .5 miles on Van Syckles Road on your right. We will have balloons by the street so you know which lot it is as there are several. If you do not see cars in the lot with bikes by 7:30 you are in the wrong lot. To ensure the full course is ridden we can circle back to the park to cover the portion of the course that w miss by starting outside the park. I know many people are coming from a distance so if for some reason you are running behind we will leave cue sheets by the coolers that will have drinks in them. It looks like we will have great weather for the ride with no rain being called for! This is a great opportunity to ride the course prior to race day and it will be fun to ride with new people and make some new friends prior to race day. Please feel free to pass this alone to others that are thinking of doing the JerseyMan, the more the merrier! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions we are happy to answer them. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Train on,

Ian Heffernan and John O'Connell

Race Directors

P.S. There has also been several inquires into water temperatures and wetsuit regulations at the JerseyMan. The water temperature should be between 70-73 degrees. The JerseyMan is a wetsuit legal race so f you do not own one and would like to rent a wetsuit please visit  http://www.wetsuitrental.com/. They are a great company and offer a great service for a reasonable price

I'm still interested to ride the course one more time.

So if anybody wants to ride on a weekday, let me know.
